This appears to be not merely incompetence, but willful disregard of actual threats. Given who is in charge, this does not surprise me in the least.
My problem with this generalized “fear” within DHS & FBI & DOD creating a lack of response & no bulletin due to political costs is that there was no sense of fear prior to BLM protests.
There also were no paper tigers let alone tigers all over social media.
Yet, there was a bulletin & overwhelming activation of force…tanks, SWATS, helicopters, rubber pellets, tear gas, fully armed police force.
All the same political operatives were in place with exception of McCarthy over at DOD who replaced Esper following election.

This is what happens in authoritarian dictatorial governments, and it is the main reason they usually fail rather quickly. Everyone around the leader self-censors all information that might displease the leader - pretty soon, the only information available to anyone is the information the leader wants to hear.
Happens a lot in corporations, too.
This is both sad and shameful. One would think that stopping a coup would be a major priority for the DHS and FBI. Looks like the Biden admin has got some serious housecleaning to do at those two agencies in the near future.
