It’d be eye roll-inducing if it weren’t so darkly nauseating.
A woman named Lia Thomas won the NCAA Division 1 national championship for the 500-yard freestyle swimming race last week. Thomas is the first transgender athlete to earn this title, beating out Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Emma Weyant, who won second place at the NCAA tournament.
There is a growing sense that revanchist reactionaries like Boebert et al are strong cases of arrested development; they’ve never left the playground.
What is becoming increasingly clear is that is precisely what makes them appealing to their constituents; members of the mean tribe finding their leadership.
In other Revanchist News, Parliament is considering a resolution declaring that Britain won the Revolutionary War and wants it all back except for Idaho, Utah, and Mississippi. Queen Elizabeth stated in a news conference that: “We think we can work with the rest. There’s some potential there.”
Thomas’ win predictably granted Republicans a soapbox from which to scream about their anti-trans agenda.
Lets not mince words, Lia Thomas lack of self-restrain just set back the cause of other people with aspirations like hers. Transgender woman have an unfair physical advantage over most women, anyone saying otherwise is full of shit.
“What You’re Feeling Isn’t a Vibe Shift. It’s Permanent Change”
I think the author misses the mark a bit, just a tiny bit. Maybe because he’s too young.
For some of us it is what our parents or grandparents went through starting in 1939 in Europe, or 1940 here in the US. Everything in our Eurocentric world went to Hell in a handbasket.
Big societal shifts, shifts that affect a large part of our white European centric world, are hard to comprehend. WW II touched countries outside of Europe just like the pandemic. Nowhere on Earth was excluded from the change that had to happen in dealing with a novel corona virus. The catastrophe didn’t happen in one localized area, it happened every where. We haven’t had to deal with that before. Or at least had the institutional knowledge of what this would be like.
God I hate it when people cry: “I just want to get back to normal”. There is no normal to get back to, some figured out what was important to them during the past two years, and some are mad that their way of life was interrupted, and they were asked to act for the common good instead of just for themselves.
So Boebert’s still spreading peace, love, and respect for her fellow human beings is she?
I would like to live long enough to see her in a retirement home as female nurse, assigned male at birth, mops drool from her chin while a male nurse, assigned female at birth, changes her diaper. Just because.
It’s just my somewhat limited observations, but I’m getting the impression that these folks aren’t so worked up over trans men. Trans men are not as common as trans women, but obviously they do exist. Are they not as threatening? If so, why?
Women who dress in men’s attire are often considered tomboys or “cute” (Annie Hall). Men who dress up in women’s clothes are considered objectionable, silly, even deviant. Perhaps it’s the very idea of rejecting virility and manhood as unnecessary for a fulfilling existence and aspiring instead to be “second class” female creatures. I dunno. That’s all I got.
She has to ramp up her street cred. “Nine Democrats and two Republicans are running in the CO-3 primary, hoping to challenge first-term Rep. Lauren Boebert, who has been a lightning rod for national controversy since her first days in office.”
Serious question: Has this fugitive from the law of averages ever done one constructive thing? I just went through her Wikipedia page and didn’t see one thing that made me shrug and say, “Well, that’s not entirely disgusting.” Sometimes, even with the worst wingnuts, there’s one relatively anodyne thing they’re into that you could feel that way about. I haven’t seen it with her.
Gonna go out on a limb here and suggest that if you’re living a life so marginalized, mistrusted, misunderstood, feared, and loathed that the government is making laws against you, you’re not doing it to take advantage of anyone. You’re doing it because you can’t live any other way. If some not-over-the-top-woke organization like the NCAA is OK with it, that’s fine with me. Presumably everyone who wins a sporting event has some sort of advantage going on that made that win happen. I just prefer to see people accepted as they feel they must live so they’re not committing suicide and such. The sporting-event side of it is relatively unimportant, but frankly not every guy is a big bruiser with huge broad shoulders. Might want to err on the side of being human beings about the whole subject. Just saying.
In other news, maybe we can have a society-wide discussion about whether this individual is, in fact, deplorable, or whether thinking that is just really wrong and bad and unfair.
