Prosecutors in Texas’ Harris County believe the substances collected in the van in which Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was fatally shot by an ICE agent in Houston last week were not drugs, the district attorney told CNN Thursday, in contrast to suspicions the FBI raised in court documents.
“Based on the information we have regarding who Mr. Salgado was and just eyeballing the evidence as it was collected yesterday, we don’t believe that they are drugs,” Harris County District Attorney Sean Teare told CNN’s Kate Bolduan on CNN News Central.
When asked why he believed that, Teare said: “We have information that we’re not going to release yet.”
“But my understanding is that this substance is being tested by the FBI, either today or in the next few days, and I think it’s so important to the public that those results be shared immediately,” Teare said.
Also, whether drugs were present is irrelevant to investigations into whether the shooting of Salgado was justified, Teare said.
“It has no bearing on why Mr. Salgado and the other three individuals (in the van during an attempted traffic stop) were targeted. It has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not the use of force that killed Mr. Salgado was justified,” Teare said.
