That was one of the insults hurled during village ‘character reformation’ sessions where the person who had angered a cadre leader, or said something that could be construed as not being in line with Chairman Mao’s thinking, had to write out all his bourgoise confessions and stand in the middle of the village while his neighbors hurled insults and slogans, and probably stones as well.

Sometimes I’m accused of living in an echo chamber, but statements like this make it really hard to gather information from a different point of view. Nonsense isn’t a point of view. When Ms. Grisham talks, I feel like she’s a teacher or other adult and I’m Charlie Brown or some other Peanuts character. I’m not comfortable, but I am becoming numbed - her lips move, but I can’t hear what she’s saying. Maybe it’s a defense mechanism.
