White House chief of staff Mark Meadows on Tuesday defended President Trump’s remarks that top leaders at the Pentagon want to keep waging wars in order to keep defense contractors “happy.”
Gee, the people whose jobs are to be prepared to defend the country want to be properly equipped to carry out that mission as ordered by the President and Congress?
Incongruous when you consider that Trump signed off on increasing the military budget and bragged about it the other day during one of his Obama bashing rants.
. “This president is consistent about one thing: if we’re going to send our sons and daughters abroad to fight on our behalf, he’s not going to let some lobbyist here in Washington D.C. — just because they want a new defense contract — suggest that they need to stay abroad one minute longer than they should.”
See, Trump collects insults and putdowns. Most are are from the far right, but not a few are from the far left. He choses from among them depending upon the situation. Now I don’t care for a bloated military budget or the revolving door between the DoD and military contractors. But Trump’s statements yesterday were a sop to the Greenwaldistas and in fact he retweeted Glenn yesterday…
Right. He’s spent his entire four years trying to rein in the Pentagon’s budget:
From NYT, 2/9/19:
WASHINGTON — Over the past two weeks, President Trump has repeatedly boasted of being a boon for the military. He has trumpeted the Pentagon’s $700 billion budget, taken credit for staving off a “major war” with North Korea and generally declared victory on all things related to the United States’ armed forces.
“Look, I accomplished the military,” Mr. Trump said, in a [perplexing verbal offering] at the Oval Office in recent days.
Funny, but if you turn it upside down and shake, there is almost a legitimate complaint about the military-industrial complex in there. If Trump weren’t so busy doing everything the lobbyists tell him to do, and hiring them as oversight for the departments that they used to wine and dine, you could almost imagine that at one point he heard something that almost made sense. But when all is said and done, it is just Trump landing on both sides of the same issue, eating his cake and having it too. He is going to destroy the ACA and give us beautiful healthcare - he is going to give monster tax cuts to corporations and the elite while draining the swamp - he is going to kill every ISIS in the world while pulling us out of all foreign wars. He is a poor man’s idea of a rich man, he is a weak man’s idea of a strong man, he is an ill-informed person’s idea of a truth teller. He is just an illiterate FOX watching demagogue.
