Originally published at: We Asked 28 GOP Officials If They’d Denounce the GOP Nominee Who Marched With Nazis in Charlottesville - TPM – Talking Points Memo
This week I asked 28 current and former Republican Party officials in Florida whether they would denounce an unrepentant white supremacist in their ranks, a man who will appear on the ballot this November as a member of the GOP. Maybe it’s a fool’s errand, in 2026, to ask the party of President Donald Trump…
The second reply about Rawson puts me in mind of Mike Johnson’s response on one of the interview shows (probably Sunday) when asked about Herrera. He said of the vile comments Herrera made about women on YouTube that it was just his online persona and his policy positions were right in line with the Republicans and they wanted him in Congress. (Johnson did make performative noises about finding the comments distasteful, but that had no effect on his support.)
So when Rawson and his ilk decide to remove anyone who doesn’t believe in the same religious beliefs as he does will he then go after the Christian denominations that don’t pray the way he demands?
He seems nice.
“In Texas, the GOP nominee for a seat in the U.S. House, Brandon Herrera, can be seen in a video using a Nazi submachine gun he calls the ‘original ghetto blaster’ and ‘Hiter’s street sweeper.’ He then literally goose-steps to a song that was sung by World War II-era Nazis.”
WTA (and I cannot stress this last part enough) F ???!!!
Could you please add to the article itself a list of the entire 28 with their name, office, and response?
Damn that bullet that took out Lincoln - who knows what would have happened had Andrew Johnson not been able to take over and deliberately halt Reconstruction after the Civil War? We’ve all been living the fallout from that failure ever since, and clearly, the results are the continued efforts by Republicans/MAGA and their enablers to publicly lambast racism while privately condoning it.

…
Does the Republican Party even care?
Spoiler – No
This guy is just a punk. But it is Florida….
Putting aside the Rawson’s unfortunate(?) porn name, he’s just waiting for his Larry Craig moment. Until that happens, no. Republicans - especially MAGA - are not going to condemn him or distance themselves. Racism, anti-semitism, homophobia & islamophobia are baked in the DNA at this point.
These Nazis are all just joking - what’s the big deal? /s
features, not bugs
So, Republicans will denounce antisemitism, but they will vote for antisemites? Either way, Republicans will not let Jews replace us?
Got it. The Republican Party is evil.
I do think a lot about how Democrats throw away perfectly good politicians who did nothing wrong (Al Franken’s offense was… comedy 5 years before joining the Senate?) while Republicans fully circle the wagons to defend and promote a guy whose Fantasy Dinner Party Guest List seems likely to include Nathan Bedford Forrest and Goebbels. I guess yay, Cornyn said c’mon? What a giant he was. The rest of the GOP leadership – and their voters, according to that mayor who blamed them – are happy to be hateful, garbage-brained monsters. Can’t they just want lower taxes and more babies? Why they show up with all the lust to cause pain?
WE MUST UNDERSTAND, THIS IS WHO REPUBLICANS VOTERS ARE!
As I have said many times, the overwhelming support by White Evangelicals for Donald “grab her by the ……” Trump proves beyond all doubt that “values” in front of the word voter is and has always been code for race. I have also said that Donald Trump did not create his base but rather Donald Trump’s base created Donald Trump.
But Paul Krugman may have said it best, “In regard to our current politics, how did we get here? Wealthy elites weaponized White grievance to gain power and then used that power to enrich themselves at the expense of the very people who gave them that power all the time scapegoating minorities. Until the rise of Donald Trump, it was possible for Republicans to deny this with a straight face.”
The point is this is who they are and by they I include Republican base voters. That is Republican voters understand they are getting ripped off but are more than willing to get ripped off as a price to keep their racism, xenophobia, religious bigotry, gay bashing, and misogyny.
My own experience living in New Orleans in 1984 was that all the White people almost to a person, man and woman, understood Reagan was screwing them but loved Reagan because “he is screwing Black people worse”. Actually, that is not a direct quote because the good White Christians of New Orleans never said “Black people”.
So of course Republican elected officials are not going to condemn racism, xenophobia because it was got them elected and what they are counting on, really all they have and have ever had since 1964, to get them reelected. .
The Nazi problem for the GOP goes right to the top as evidenced by JD’s vocal support for the AfD in Germany on multiple instances.
Sure, he was burning crosses on a lot of lawns but, to be fair, the crosses weren’t that big.
Oy, we have a picture on the wall – me, about age 19, in Levi’s and shirt. I look a little bit like this jerk, but then I suppose any number of us did, too at that age.
Black people worse.
I’ve said this so many times, even if not as well as you have. The Saint Ronnie campaign and election handed me my big epiphany about our politics. I realized how naive I had been. That SOB fucked up so many lives and so many families with his economic agenda and actions. I believe he was the first effort at what we have now in a federal gubmint.
