It’s all for show. Trump pretending he’s the big man, the peacemaker. Putin is happy to string him along, while trying to avoid more sanctions with promises of Trump hotels and resorts in Russia after a deal is made.
Taking a slice of Ukraine’s eastern territory isn’t enough for Putin; that wasn’t the reason for the war in the first place. What Putin wants is to bring Ukraine back under Moscow’s sphere of influence as a buffer against the West, with participation in the Ukrainian government and other concessions like restoring Russian language rights.
Any “deal” Putin agrees to for a ceasefire or end to the war will have to include that, so it’s a nonstarter for Zelensky. This is all just Kabuki theater.
No one knows what this alleged ‘peace deal’ is; but, I expect something heavily weighted towards Russia’s ambitions.

Recall that one of the reasons the AUMF was incredibly broad was because the ‘enemy’ was not a nation state, but multiple terrorist organizations that operated in many countries, and it was not a declared war, on either side. It was a somewhat valid justification?
