WaPo Guild Urges Paper To Lift Suspension Of Journo Who Tweeted Kobe Bryant Rape Case | Talking Points Memo

I presume after Trump passes away that Queen Ivanka the First will have anyone who brings up his history of sexual assault and fail to adequately honor his grand achievements arrested, imprisoned and tortured (#TraitorTulsi will lead the effort, with all the techniques she learned from her BFF Assad).

Apparently some truths are sentenced to die in darkness.

Oh, FFS. Her “agenda” seems to be that she’s a sexual assault survivor, and seriously didn’t like the unalloyed hagiography being put out. Of course it’s tragic he and all the others died. But I imagine it’s pretty traumatic for a rape victim to see a whole country seem to erase a pretty prominent accusation of rape.

Actually, every article the NYT has written (I believe 3-4) so far- including today, has written about it…almost as the first “definer” of who Kobe was

I don’t support her suspension…but I must wonder- from a journalistic position, would she have used her WAPO space to write a column whose sum total was a link to an article about the rape allegation? Of Course Not. What the tweet represented was a journalist’s conclusion that the sum total of who the object of her tweet was-is: You Are A Rapist.(She didn’t even acknowledge he was dead or anyone else).

Problem with adults (in general) using Twitter as an official communication devise is; IT often leaves them STUPID. Twitter, in the hands of the-over-17-crowd should be banned. Or create two versions; one for minors; one for adults without filters on their brains.

You have some NYT whoever- actually writing an Essay comparing “Where were you when Kobe died.…” with how people remembered where they were when JFK died…

Most people did; but I guess it depends on one’s NBA Fandom status…and age.

It vaguely rings a bell, but I don’t follow any sports. Or celebrities. Before all the news around his death, you could’ve told me Kobe Bryant was a football player and I wouldn’t have noticed anything amiss.

I do recall he said that he’d refuse to go if Trump invited him to the White House. I did like that.

He recognized in an apology that she had not consented. Nothing alleged about it.

It came off as saying he, his daughter and the other eight got what they deserved. I just wish journalist would keep it :100: – because Donald Trump [admitted] he has sexually assaulted women.

The accusations against Kobe made huge waves in an era well before #metoo. As did the widespread impression that celebrity, wealth and popularity swept any concern for the accuser out the window. I’m confident the news of Kobe’s death was pretty painful to a lot of sexual assault survivors in a very different way from his fans. To see blanket adoring coverage for the hours following news of his death would be hard to take for those who clearly recall the episode or their own experiences.

And if your first inclination is to bring up disproven accusations that fit your personal agenda instead of the myriad, widespread charitable works the person was involved in, perhaps you should check yourself before tweeting. That’s all.

Do I agree she deserved a suspension? Not really. But she doesn’t deserve martyr status. What she did was still distasteful and insensitive to the family. DO people defending her and calling it acceptable even know what it’s like to lose a parent in a tragedy? The burning need to highlight the worst about everyone at all times is a real fucking problem in our society. If Bernie died tomorrow, you think there’d be no backlash for immediately trying to shit all over him for 2016…or Warren goes in a car crash this weekend and we’re immediately deluged with “Pocahontas” crap? How about Biden has a heart attack tomorrow and the GOP still calls Hunter to testify in the Senate? When did the newly and tragically dead, and by extension their families, become free shit targets for advancing our personal butthurt agendas?

In reply to rockittla: you wanted the word “alleged” inserted? Do yourself a solid and review the case. He provided both a written and public apology to the victim.

Riiiiiiight. Because innocent people regularly pay millions of dollars to buy the silence of their false accusers.

Kobe first denied that there was any encounter at all, until he found out that they had collected semen samples.

When the first thing out of their mouth is a lie, people tend to distrust the next things they claim.

Really? She didn’t even give it time to exist. Her response was almost instant, and victimhood elsewhere doesn’t give you the right to victimize. People need to get it out of their fucking heads that victimhood excuses everything.

But I get it. You’ve entirely confused who is really being somehow canonized in this situation. Your post essentially admits that the effort was a smear because it was somehow intolerable that someone’s death be mourned and their life and better angels celebrated without shit instantly being thrown on it all to service a political agenda and a sense of outraged entitlement to vengeance.

“Disproven allegations”
“Distasteful and insensitive to the family.”

I’d put both of those comments in the Fuck That Noise bin.
you don’t want your name associated with a sexual assault?
fine.
Don’t sexually assault someone.
Someone you pay 2.5M in an out of court settlement to.
Someone you apologize to for engaging in an unwanted sexual assault.

The BS accompanying privileged, wealthy individuals who assault from a position of reasonable confidence that they have people to handle this… is a big part of what is at issue.

Revisionism.
Maybe we should scrub out offensive slogans from National Archives while we’re at it.

I’ve not claimed in any way that he’s a saint. He certainly had relations with that woman and fucked up his defense, as is reliably the case whenever such accusations are made about a person who is going to try to protect their marriage or significant relationship. But that’s entirely different and separate from whether he somehow abused or raped her. That’s been decided and if the game is to ever accept when such things are decided in a way that doesn’t serve your agenda, we’re no better than Faux News nutjobs.

People who have consensual encounters don’t tend to have to pay millions to get an NDA. The original evidence included evidence of numerous vaginal lacerations consistent with a non-consensual incident.

That’s true. It’s a common phenomenon. But it’s also inappropriate to put someone on a pedestal after they died without recognizing the feelings of those they harmed.

I just checked a few post about Trump at the Washington Post and not 1️⃣ had an addendum that he is an admitted sexual assaulter. Some folks in the comments did though.

Criminal trial was dropped reportedly because accuser would not testify. He said he had misunderstood and apologized to her. She sued civilly and it was settled out of court. So, he was never tried and found innocent.

Everyone makes mistakes. Even those we love and admire. My take: We tend to not want to look at bad things people have done because we want black/white and can’t bear “gray”, where forgiveness might be involved.
