Walmart CEO Calls For Potential Reinstatement Of Assault Weapons Ban

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on Thursday that he supports a debate over reauthorizing the 1994 Federal Assault Weapons Ban after a series of mass shootings left more than 30 people dead earlier this month, including an incident at a Walmart store.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1242863

He supports a debate on the topic… How cowardly. Particularly when Walmart customers have been slaughtered by these weapons.

Talk is cheap. Walmart is cheap with its employees. And on and on it goes.

A “Debate” to run out the clock on the issue so the next “Shiny Object” can distract the MSM.

“We do not sell military-style rifles, and we believe the reauthorization of the Assault Weapons ban should be debated to determine its effectiveness in keeping weapons made for war out of the 3 hands of mass murderers,” the CEO said.

I try not to nitpick typos but can’t resist here. if mass murderers had 3 hands it would be a lot easier to identify them and deny them permission to own firearms.

“remove weapons from those who have been determined to pose an imminent danger.”

Unfortunately, that determination is always made after-the-fact and will only stop the next killing spree when we put Peabody’s Wayback Machine into mass production. Until then, try something practical like limiting the capacity of magazines and having a serious discussion about what weapons should not be available to the general public because, in the words of Justice Scalia, “the Second Amendment does not protect those weapons not typically possessed by law-abiding citizens for lawful purposes.”

I support a debate as well, but I don’t have umpteengazillion dollars I can use to actually DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

I support a ban on assault weapons. What is left to debate?

Maybe he could start by removing firearms from his frickin’ stores.

“Now, if you’ll excuse me,” Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said, “I have to go back to earning the Waltons $1 million dollars an hour.”

Fun Fact: Walmart is the largest seller of firearms in the country.

Call in Mr. Wizard the Lizard to undo all the carnage.

If Walmart doesn’t post signs to stop customers from bringing weapons in their stores who knows when some Young Republicans Club dork will come trotting in armed and armored in his 63rd attempt at impressing the ladies and finally getting laid?

“Support a debate.”

Oh, bite me, you wuss.

I support a debate on Walmart paying a living wage. Let’s see how far you stand up for that one, asshole.

Do you know what % of their business comes from the sale of firearms and related goods?

Is that legislation being brought up for a vote in the Senate or not?

I am going out on a limb and saying Walmart sell more Cheetohs and ranch dressing than firearms. Just a guess.

Walmart sells products that sever little kids bodies in half and you know they are not using them for hunting animals, your customers are being murdered at your stores (guarantee all of them deserved better that to have their last moment on earth be in a f-in Walmart) and now shooters are tagging Walmart to telegraph their plans. You have blood on your hands and in a just world, the Walton family would be bankrupted for its part in the murders (hello Sacklers!). Nice press release tho’

I once worked with an older lady in a grueling job, years ago.

She was moonlighting from WalMart and I felt so bad for her need for this particular set of duties.

They could pay their workers double, with adequate fringe benefits, easily

Hey - Walmart is in the weapons business, this has nothing to do with Cheetos. They had to do this to put all other local stores out of business. They looked into it, ran the numbers and did it. So Walmart can get its shit together and put is own controls in place that any other weapons dealer has.

Raytheon is here in Massachusetts and you know what, no one at Raytheon has gotten murdered at work by one of their Patriot missles because they probably saw what happened to Tony Stark in Ironman 1 and they know how to run a goddam weapons distribution chain.

My career is all about assessing risks and liabilities for clients (yes, our products can kill) and man, this just hit me like a ton of bricks today. If the CEO had not put out this stupid statement that his legal team watered down after 7 hours of review, I would not have seen their culpability so clearly. Funny how that works…

No. And I suspect Walmart would consider it proprietary information, so it would never be released.
