Uruguay is now warning its citizens to be on guard for hate crimes when traveling to the U.S. in the wake of shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio that left 31 people dead.
As an American, this is embarrassing. But I tell my own kids to be very careful and to always be aware of their surroundings when they go to the mall, the theater, or really, any public place, so who can blame Uruguay for saying the same basic thing?
Back in 2011, I was in Ibague, Colombia doing a homestay during a year of traveling abroad. I was still learning Spanish via immersion at the time, but spending a lot of time watching TV with my Colombian family. I was there at the time when Gabrielle Giffords was shot in Tucson, and it was a big news story in Colombia.
I will never forget hearing my Colombian family remarking at the news at how dangerous a place America must be.
Even the Colombians, who are no strangers to violence themselves, think the US is a dangerous place.
By all means, warn people around the world to stay away from businesses like WalMart, Chick-Fil-A, Home Depot and Hobby Lobby. When this gun violence starts hurting the bottom line of conservative billionaires, maybe we will finally get some real gun reform legislation passed by Republicans?
You should always be careful driving through the Deep Red States. The police there are notorious for pulling over cars from north of the Mason Dixon routinely. Whites or Blacks. They are likely to confiscate your car if you don’t pay whatever fine requested on the spot to the arresting officer. So much graft and corruption surrounds anything conservative or Republican.
I just got back from China, where many people thought the US was a dangerous place to live due to all then violence, and that China was safer because of the government efforts to control the population. It was a weird two-sides-of-the-coin moment, a choice between the extremes of everyone armed and shooting or the government controlling every action to keep people safe. I couldn’t really argue that guns aren’t a problem, just that statistically it was very unlikely you’d have to face the kinds of events we see in the US, and that we really needed to pass some laws to limit guns but going to the levels China has was not a good idea (I didn’t press that hard on the point, I ran into a lot of Chinese government propaganda talking to people and didn’t want to make waves).
The rate is accelerating though, if it keeps up like this then we really will start seeing shootings every day…I worry a bit that these nuts are going to decide next year it’s time to rise up and make sure Trump wins, by violently driving people away form voting, or by forcing the election result they want, or just by blowing up as much as they can after he loses the vote. It’s really going to get ugly…
I really envy your witnessing current affairs in a place like China : - ) You account for a lot of people… lol
Violence in America usually means gun violence. Avoid violence and one can probably avoid a shooting. Now… ahem… about those radical churches with their fetus fetish and network of bomb makers…
