If only these laws had been in effect yesterday , then surely some good guy with a gun would have preemptively killed the shooter, thus preventing any killing at all.

Look - I lived in Northern California for over a decade. The Bay Area is beautiful - and too damned expensive. I met plenty of racist assholes in the central valley - and there are more guns in CA than in Texas. (Much to Gregg Abbotts everlasting shame). Of course there’s more people too.
I’d like to point out that Texas was the home to some pretty awesome and powerful liberal women. Ann Richards, Molly Ivins, Barbara Jordan - the holy trinity of kickass ladies.
It USED to be a blue state - before Tom Delay did is illegal off year gerrymander.
It will be Blue again some day.

It is simple, really.
Ban all guns and the current generation won’t want to slaughter everyone anymore. There is nothing wrong with them so we don’t need to figure out why they have started doing this.
Ban illegal drugs and dispense legal drugs only with a prescription certifying need issued only by who must have doctorate degrees in medicine and no one will want to abuse drugs anymore. Surely everyone must admit that 50 years of “The War on Drugs” with trillions of dollars spent prove the concept works. No one overdoses from drug abuse today.
Ban BMWs, Mercedes, Porsches and other high end cars and no one will change lanes without signalling anymore.
It is all obviously so simple.
Also, children will be required to pray in school one hour for every hour spent playing video games. Two hours if Grand Theft Auto.

With a population of over 20M, it seems that, at any given moment of the day, there are at least 2 million here in the state who are awake, racist, armed, crazy and/or drunk. But then you don’t have to be drunk, crazy, racist, or awake to be armed. Not any more. Not even in church,
