Just two weeks after the President fired a government watchdog who was investigating arms sales to Saudi Arabia, he’s looking at … more arms sales to Saudi Arabia.
As a country, losing the ability to do oversight on the executive branch is sort of like losing your sense of smell and your sense of taste – it isn’t deadly per se, but as a sign of the other things that are going on in your body politic that might well end up killing you.
In all seriousness, we should have broken diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia. Instead, we are rewarding the country for showing how easy it is to murder your political enemies. F Trump, F MBS, and damn this crooked road.
Sell the weapons already! Raytheon’s stock price has plunged by 60% this year. Esper is a Raytheon guy, Pompeo is a Raytheon guy. Mike Garcia, the newest addition to Congress is a Raytheon exec. Doesn’t legislative and executive capture mean anything anymore? And besides, what are the odds that our own precision-guided weapons would be used on us or our allies?
Trump’s purported indifference to the inspector general probing Saudi weapons sales is odd, given the President’s fondness for bragging about inflated sales figures to the kingdom. And doubly so given that, according to the Daily Beast, presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner is keen on another sale.
So is Jared getting a commission? Hey do we collect sales tax on these type of sales?
It’s the strike-back gesture that counts, both in his own head and in those of his base. That this EO has about as much effect as declaring another infrastructure week, doesn’t matter.
So what do the Saudis do in a years time when all the weaponry they’ve purchased needs parts, supplies, or servicing, and President Biden says no dice?
Cause and effect? You THINK? Not that I think Donnie CARES if he gets caught but maybe one of his minions said ‘Pssssst POTUS? It IS an election year you know!’…
