Twitter Announces Ban On Political Ads As FB Takes Heat Over Its Ad Policy | Talking Points Memo

So, there’s a pay version of Twitter? I didn’t know that.

Try Botski-R-Us-Da if they won’t let you buy ads.

Oh. I think that I get it now. You can buy ads on Twitter which will be shown to users who log on to their Twitter accounts, right? Just like non-Prime TPM.

Sometimes I wish I were a soul-less dead-eyed billionaire. I think life must be much easier that way.

Alz I’m sayin’ is is that if I were easily swayed by the ads that appear on TPM I would be enjoying some spectacularly ugly pants, while having my eyes shaded from the sun with my MAGA hat, and secure in the knowledge that I had contributed to Foundations for Saving America For Billionaires. Also, I have been promised that I will meet some nice Asian Ladies.

Yeah, well there is the obvious hypocrisy in broadcasting the Orange One’s lies on a daily basis, but I’ll take it as a good move that might put some pressure on Zuckerberg to kill political ads.

I don’t think he will, but AOC left a boot print on his butt in that recent testimony. If enough people bail from FB and say why they’re doing it on other social media, maybe that will send a message.

The only people left “doing” Facebook are grandmothers, mouth-breathers and businesses that still believe “liking us on Facebook” is a viable business strategy. The grandmothers mostly traffic in cat photos and pictures of the grand-kids, the mouth-breathers are already in the bag for lying liars and any business that gives Zuckerberg money to be liked by strangers needs to re-examine their business model.

Well that’s good, I guess. Oh, and Fuck Zuck.

(I don’t have an account on either platform, never have, never will.)

Perhaps the problem is that our politics, our culture, and our laws might not be ready to handle political speech on the internet the way we can with older mediums and fora.

Talking concretely, maybe it’s harder for an army of Russian propagandists to insert effective misinformation into our television, radio, and in-person political activities. Or rather, it’s easier for us to spot them and keep them out.

Perhaps we need time to reflect on 2016 and figure out what kinds of rules we need for the political lane of the information superhighway. For starters, that conversation is impossible right now because the current administration and ruling party have very powerful motives to participate in bad faith.

Maybe we won’t be able to have that discussion on the national level with support from both parties until we have a clean* election. That might mean an outright ban is needed on all internet platforms until we can figure out the laws and/or build any technology that’s needed to enforce those laws. I’d be okay with that.

I still don’t understand why someone hasn’t Stuxnetted that fucking Nazi-infested platform. I don’t think American techie boyz have the talent.

Has he banned Trump’s account for it’s gross violations of Twitter’s rule?

No?

Sorry Dorsey, but you’re still not there yet.

I’ve often thought we should give each nominee in a race say, 5 minutes a night, perhaps after the nightly news to speak direct to camera about an issue. No slick montages, voice overs, shady non-profits. Oh, and make the campaign season 3 months max.
