Trump's Big Beautiful Bill Cleared the Way for More Data Centers. Dems Are Hoping You Know That.

Democrats are taking a convoluted, complex provision that was included in Republicans’ Big Beautiful bill to pin the blame for the national boom in data center construction squarely on Republicans ahead of the midterms. President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill is most widely known for making Trump’s 2017 tax cuts for the wealthy permanent, and offsetting…

My goal is to be alive in 100 years. Like Mitch’s goal of showing up this month, it’s only aspirational.

And they have all said it’s their goal for Senator McConnell to be here when the Senate comes in

And it is my goal to lose ten pounds by November and win America’s Next Top Model before I turn 80

Hate to brake it to you Darr but Rep Jason Smith’s district has lot of creeks, which are fed by springs. I think the better argument is that electric rates will increase. And the promise of jobs is not going to pan out like they’re trying to spin it.
And damn Jason’s district is huge, which means he’s representing a lot state parks and at least one national park.

Rep. James Comer (R-KY) told CNN that the senior senator from his state will be back to his duties in the Senate at the start of its next session on September 14.

This is why you should always go with local embalming. When you send away for the work to be done, it takes forever to get back to you. And then there is the question, shipping by UPS or FedEx?

Side note: When we cremated my mother after her passing. (Being specific there), I believe she went by FedEx. All I know is she was with the family in Michigan in right proper order. We had her out of Texas in just over a week. It was annoying with all the people asking about a viewing or services. Actually there were none. Took the family up north a couple of months for things to thaw out for her to end up in the family plot.

Where I live water is a precious resource. Tucson cannot be profligate with water. It’s either people or a data center

This has been the summer of water here on west bank of the Mississippi River. If we’re not actually getting rained on, the humidity is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

Funny you should mention the jobs issue. According to Josh’s article, the data center in Independence, Missouri, will create 130 full-time jobs at a cost of $6.26 billion in tax breaks. If we say that has a present value of maybe $3 billion, that is still giving Nebius over $23 million per job. It would be more efficient to just give those 130 workers a salary of $500,000 a year for 46 years. In other words, Nebius and the Independence officials who voted for this absurd subsidy “have a lot of damn gall” touting this project for job creation.

Data center promoters promise jobs but the details are usually fuzzy. There will be people needed on-site for maintenance, but much of the work is highly technical and there may not be qualified people in the local community. Especially if it’s rural. Those jobs may go to people brought in from outside the community. Some of the operation can also be done remotely over the Internet, so those jobs aren’t going to locals either.

Promising jobs with fuzzy details is par for the course in the economic development space. When I was writing my blog, middleclasspoliticaleconomist.com, a subsidy of $10 million per job would have been off the charts, and in Independence we see more than twice that amount! But I don’t know if that’s even the record because I have not examined the flood of recent data center subsidies.

BTW, I was writing about data centers more than 10 years ago: https://www.middleclasspoliticaleconomist.com/2015/05/why-subsidize-data-centers.html

Independence is right next door to Kansas City, Missouri. It isn’t rural at all. It is a historic town that competed with Westport and St. Joseph to be the gateway to the west. Now it is a bedroom community for Kansas City.

When I read “Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill Cleared the Way for More Data Centers. Dems Are Hoping You Know That” I am dismayed. Hope isn’t a plan. Most people don’t know what was in the big ugly bill. It is up to Democrats to tell them. The mainstream media won’t.
