For years, the right’s best think tanks and commentators have criticized an Obama-era anti-segregation policy by changing the subject.
But to Thomas Sugrue, Director of the Metropolitan Studies Program at New York University, Trump’s language in rescinding the rule reveals what interests the President about the debate: the opportunity to stoke the flames of the culture war and weaponize race as an election approaches.
AND…Killing two birds with one racist stone:
Let’s call a spade a spade…
And Trump wonders why nobody likes him!
Is it time for another Infrastructure Week?
10 Say racist thing
20 Deny it was racist
30 GO TO 10
To repeat, “Donald Trump is the personification of the Republican id.”
I wonder if any of the rural poor who love themselves all things tRump will be able to finger out that this also is directed at and applies to them?
I don’t think so…do you?
For some entertainment, go to the front page of TPM, hit Ctrl-F, and type “Biden” in your browser’s search bar.
Not only will they not be able to finger it out, they also won’t be able to figure it out!
What a piece of shit.
The Suburban Lifestyle Dream is all about conformance. That’s why they had, and still have, CCRs. Now they’re about things like what color you can paint your house or what kind of patio you can build.
The use of “finger” was intentional. It’s what they use to remove the agates from their nostrils.
Best tool they have…
Trump’s housing racism is well documented (even in the courts). But have times changed since 1970? Trump is betting they have not. I grew up in 3/4 acre suburban tract homes outside Vally Forge Park. We Mtbiked the abandoned large farm outside VF before there were Mtbikes. There was one decrepit stone barn left standing.
A developer bought the place to create lowish and middle income townhouses and homes. The backlash was a decade long and rabid. In the end, the developer won, but the $25K townhouses had become $125K (current price $450K) due to his millions in legal fees and high demand for housing in the area. No longer low income, so the backlash kind of won. They even tried to rezone the development for 2-acre housing, which most township residents did not have.
Very long synopsis: https://tehistory.org/hqda/html/v40/v40n3p083.html
Housing in America is screwed up.
Unfortunately, there is a hard core of stupid in this country that love this POS.
I had read the introduction of this a while back, but this move by Trump tangentially brings it back to mind and I’ll try to read it completely soon:
Gosh, all those black men wearing “We’ve Come for Your Women” T-shirts and wandering around their neighborhoods must be very scary.
Excellent summary! Trump’s tweet was was wrong on many levels. Most research finds affordable housing developments have a very small effect on housing prices and no effect on crime. There is a benefit to having some of the people that work in your stores, teach your children, clean and maintain your homes and offices, and care for your elderly parents live in your community. Rescinding the rule will not stop any projects, it simply requires jurisdictions getting HUD funds to honestly look at the whole range of policies that work against fair housing. In other words, Trump’s move is racist vaporware.
A friend once told me in her condo development there were approved colors of mulch. I wasn’t aware that mulch came in any outlandish colors that could upset one’s neighbors but it seems to have been a concern.
The DPW in Newton, MA got a ton of grief about 10 years ago when they bought bright red bark mulch for the street trees.
He is only playing to his “base” now. Beyond disgusting.
There are certainly people in this country with a lot of time on their hands and little on their minds.
