This discussion, while important given the size of the country and scarcity of polling places in some areas, misses the bigger issue, voter registration. For example, looking at the 2024 election, 70% of the 162 million registered voters in the US voted in the US, which in turn were about 60% of the voting-age population in the US of about 267 million people. For comparison, Finland’s voting age population in 2024 was 4.5 million, just slightly more than the 4.5 million registered voters. Thus, a 71% turnout in the Finnish presidential looks similar to the US at first glance, but is considerably better when voter registration is considered. Every Finnish citizen automatically becomes a registered voter on their 18th birthday (and parliament is considering lowering the voting age given the fucked planet young people are inheriting). The real problem in the US is barriers to voter registration and proof of eligibility. In some countries the social security number is linked to birthday and gender, so when voting and presenting an ID for scanning there is the common sense inference that the photo would show, say, a 23-year-old male or 92-year-old female. Another underdiscussed factor is that some Americans do not have bank accounts. Part of this is that Americans bank by “household” which makes it impossible to verify personal identity through two- or three-tier verification. Eliminating “household” accounts is difficult due to the American belief system and legal structures.
It is also part of the reason the US in no longer considered a “liberal democracy”. Thank you, John Roberts.
In the V-Dem Institute’s democracy report published in 2026, which describes the year 2025, the U.S. was classified as an “electoral democracy” for the first time in over 50 years, losing its status as a liberal democracy.
