I’m certain Senators from purple states up for re-election in 2020 (like Gardner, Collins and Tillis) absolutely do not want to vote on impeachment at all. They lose either way. Vote to acquit and they look like “party over country” hypocrites. Vote to convict and their base will become enervated and demoralized. That’s why I think just forcing senators to make a binary choice on impeachment will be a win.
That it does. This jury will be rigged to the max. Whoever runs against these guys will need to start with oppo commercials about a week before the trial.

Exactly. Mob Bosses usually don’t have the full faith and credit of the US Treasury at their back, the entire Justice apparatus, the entire Law Enforcement powers under their thumb, unlimited legal/lawyer staffs and funding, and all R congresscritters and the entire bank of R Senators and a huge campaign war machine complete with rallies and commercials backstopping and firewalling for them.

This is all getting more and more untenable. The Congressional GOP will be 100% pro-Trump, pro-Putin, pro-one-party-rule. Fox News is losing its very few journalists. Lunatics are being appointed to the bench in record numbers. The DOJ insulates Republicans from crimes and criminalizes innocent Democrats.
Democrats must develop a narrative that describes what’s going on: the destruction of our democracy.

If you count all his SuperPACs and Foreign Corporation Donations and Shadow 503© supporters, and LLCs it is estimated Trump has control of over $1 BILLION for his re-election.
Add to that the Republican State Legislatures that will do everything in their considerable power to ensure he wins in their states, and you have a perfect storm of corruption, money, roadblocks to voting, and feet on the scales of Democracy to make this the toughest election we have ever faced in our history.
The ONLY WAY we defeat Trump, his Marching Morons, and his Simpering Minions is to GOTV and DEMAND we be allowed to cast our ballots.
I understand that the old Joseph Stalin quote: “It’s not important who votes, it’s only important who counts the votes.” is what we are up against, but we have no choice if we want to rescue our Democracy and ourselves from ruin.

The Senate is Consitutionally empowered to hold an impeachment vote wherein each Senator’s vote is anonymous, no roll call is revealed. McConnell could protect some Senators this way, but I think there’s more risk it would result in many Senators voting to convict.
Republicans could also institute a rule the final vote was a voice vote, and McConnell could just gavel the vote recorded as an acquital, regardless the decibels of those in favor or against.

That is a very scary point — we have arrived at a situation where 40% of people are supporting autocracy. I suppose some are knowingly doing it for expedient reasons, but what on earth happens after the election if the GOP loses? This strikes me as a genie that won’t easily get back into the bottle.
