The whole point of this Arlington debacle is to wrest public attention and the public imagination away from the very positive and uplifting and humanizing messaging of the DNC. When lesser acts didn’t do it, Trump did something that’s technically illegal*: he knows the public cannot resist the idea of him actually getting locked up (he knows he faces zero risk, as a billionaire).
R voters generally vote against people they hate, rather than for people or policies they like. Fox and Trump tell R voters that Dems are vile baby murderers. The DNC showed otherwise, and was big enough and loud enough that it might penetrate.
Trump has been acting out because a message of hope and a positive vision are anathema to all Republican GOTV efforts.
