Breaking News: Alex Cannon reveals deep weakness in Trump Org procedure: despite all your best efforts and intentions, you still could accidentally hire someone who is at least slightly ethical.

The point has been made here before, that the DOJ doesn’t get a search warrant on three criminal statutes if they’re not planning to indict on sufficient evidence from that search. They don’t do this just for fun.

Ethics aren’t the issue, preserving his own miserable skin is.

Retrieving the effing classified documents is a goal in itself, and a search warrant accomplishes that.

Well sure, in the same way that a search warrant of a burglar’s home will recover stolen items that can be returned to the rightful owner. It doesn’t preclude indictments on the underlying crime.

A sign that indictments will follow is that the DOJ is contesting the Special Master bullshit, and getting the 11th Circuit to clear the continuing criminal investigations with the classified material. If all they wanted was to recover the docs, that wouldn’t be happening.

Anyone know how the judge responds to “I need a delay so I can file several frivolous lawsuits as an excuse for the delay ?”

The government has an interest in preserving (what’s left of) functioning rule of law. Contesting crazypants favoritism rulings serves that interest.

will recover stolen items that can be returned to the rightful owner

The government’s interest in retrieving classified documents is a lot more urgent than their interest in restoring some guy’s stolen TV.

All this to say that, while I do think indictments are likely, this is not a slam dunk conclusion. There are reasonable and probable other motivations for the government actions you’ve cited.

TDFG is spreading false rumors about leaks coming from DOJ because it fits his narrative that he is being targeted for political payback. Citing authorities as the source of damaging leaks is a standard and well-coordinated Trump response to draw attention away from himself when bad news breaks.

In this case, news organizations probably tapped Trump’s disenchanted staff but it serves Trump to claim the leaks came from DOB lawyers. Justice Cannon cited the leaks as a reason for the Special Master despite no evidence of bad faith by DOJ.

One of Trumps attorneys made the second most important of his/her life, the first was making it public so DOJ would know where they stand.

How long do I have to watch, before he gets a break through?
