He’ll keep dodging the question unless DeSantis gets close enough in the polling that he needs to get on record with something less extreme than the DeSantis 6-week ban. Which is effectively a total ban.
His best bud Lindsey Graham is promoting a 12-week national ban with full exceptions, so Trump might be talked into taking that position which won’t hurt him in the primary. It’s a national ban the GOP primary voters will care about, not the details. They’ll know he’ll sign anything put in front of him regardless of the details.
Meanwhile, Trump is polling so far ahead that he can afford to keep dancing around the question for now. The avoidance dance will get even wilder after he wins the primary.

I do not count politicians loyal to anything. A very clear example is Lindsey Graham. Remember how he was John McCain’s side kick an shadow? After John died Lindsey was lost for a while Now… now he has that real estate seller/ casino failure specialist as his avatar/god. Lindsey can smell power the way a bloodhound smells who he is tracking. Lindsey will follow whoever has power he can share.

Pledge to support the winner of the GOP primary. It’s basically a promise not to go third party or otherwise act as a spoiler if a candidate loses the primary, which is what the RNC was scared of in 2016 with regard to Trump. This is the same thing all over again.
Trump won’t sign that pledge because it’s an admission that he’s not the leader of the GOP and someone else might win. It’s beneath the King to debate commoners, you know. Especially if he can get more of these CNN town halls.

There’s no indication that trump ever read “Art of the Deal”, much less practiced it. Early in the former guy’s maladministration, Big Bill Richardson wrote a snarky editorial recommending that trump read it, instead of doing what he was currently doing.

I disagree.
To iterate that which has been said many times on message boards but interestingly never by the mainstream media even though obviously true is that; 1) Trump did not create his base but rather the base created Trump, and 2) the overwhelming support for Donald “grab her by the …” Trump by White Evangelicals proves beyond all doubt that “values” in front of the word voter is and has always been code for race.
With the above in mind, Trump’s signature move that has endeared him to his base and caused them to be so loyal is his willingness to “say the quite part out loud”. That is what has endured Trump to his base is being openly racist, religiously bigoted even though I doubt he personally is religious at all, xenophobic, misogynistic and hypocritical in advocating for a different set of morals and standards for his base versus all Americans.
That is the one thing I believe Trump knows is his base. So it is possible, as many have suspected, most of his base really does not care one way or the other about abortion and it was always merely a way to hide their true reasons for their voting patterns and actions and also to get others, particularly Catholics, to go along. I mean when Roe was first decided, it is well documented that White Evangelicals, including Jerry Falwell, supported it. Evangelicals only made abortion a cause so as to hide their real intention of wanting to continue racial discrimination and to get others to support their cause.
But to the point you made, that Trump attempts to straddle every position on controversial issues", you can say Trump is short on specifics, you cannot say he is not direct and plain speaking on issues most important to his base which is why they are his base.
So while I disagree that Trump is not direct in saying what his base wants to hear; that immigrants are murders, racists are fine people, non-Christians should not be allowed in America, women are unequal to men, cops or White people in general should be able to shoot Black people at the slightest provocation if not just at the point of encounter.
It could just be that his base really does not care about the abortion issue or to the extent they do care, they only want to outlaw it as a way of making life worse for “those people” but want abortion to be accessible for themselves.
