Trump Claims To Have Received Target Letter In Jack Smith’s Jan. 6 Probe - TPM – Talking Points Memo

Children, and those who act like children, need consequences for the consistent inappropriate and illegal breaking of boundaries.

The grand jury has been meeting Tuesday and Thursday. Thursday is the fourth day. So I expect the indictment to come when he no-shows on Thursday.

And this one is definitely in D.C.

He was already in the system.

This development was inevitably going to happen.

I wonder if the timing of this target letter is to remind Cannon of the unfettered criminality of this man and that helping him out would not be a good look.

The news was announced by Trump on his social media problem. No reputable prosecutor would make public a target letter in advance of an indictment.

Wish I could have been a fly on the wall for the fight over which low-level employee got stuck with the responsibility of reading it to him. Because, y’know, the man’s illiterate.

Sorry, but until I actually see the letter, I don’t know that I trust him to be doing anything more than fundraising over the threat of that investigation. It’s been his M.O. since forever.

Yeah, I’m skeptical.

No Judge Cannon here. No tangle of CIPA rules to sort through. No way Donnie Two-Scoops wriggles out of this one.

My belief is that Smith would not let external events influence his decision when to indict, certainly not to indict before he was satisfied that there was little to be gained by further delay. This investigation has gone on since early January 2023, proceeded by an immense effort by the January 6 committee in 2021-2022. Certainly not a rush to judgement

Raises an interesting point. One could ask, “What was Trump’s motive in releasing this information today of all days?” And the answer is: stop trying to project logical thinking onto a lunatic.

That said, wasn’t it Trump who disclosed the first such letter he received for the MAL case? I only bring it up because timing of the former suggests we won’t have to wait long for an indictment.

So now I am looking forward to Jack Smith’s announcement. They have the added virtue of being powerfully brief.

A bet: Trump will publicly confess to attempting to overturn the government within a week. “I had every right to overthrow the government. I was just taking it back from the Marxists and crackheads.”

As Sam Gamgee used to tell Frodo Baggins, “That’s why my old Gaffer always used to say.”

I think that it is not unusual for the defense to announce an impending indictment to get out in front of the news and simultaneously strongly assert their innocence. In Trump’s case, the vast array of right wingers starting with the House Republicans can get an early start at condemning the investigation as politically motivated, with no response from the prosecution side for a few days.
