As far as Doctors deciding who should be ventilated or not it’s not an arbitrary decision and certainly not as flippant as you make it out to be. Family involvement is involved. My Sister in Law contracted a superbug, Aspergillus fumigatus in the hospital and was put on a ventilator. When extensive testing showed that she had no chance of recovery but could continue to survive only on a respirator the Drs advised removal and allow nature to take it course. Or the family could continue with the current care she was being given. She was also in a medically induced coma. With counseling from an ethics committee the decision was made to remove the respirator. She died with 5 minutes of removal.
We made a similar decision for my father last month but not to have him put on a respiratory. His organs were failing, he lost about 40% of his normal body weight and could not gain any weight for over 2 years. He heart was failing, he had large beds sores that would not heal and he had dementia caused by 2 mini stroke. Speaking with his personal physician who recommend to let nature takes it’s course and with counseling from the hospice team we asked that the ventilator that was on standby be removed from his room and had a DNR order in place. He died peacefully in his sleep. The doctors said his heart just slowly stopped beating.
These decisions are not made arbitrarily or without conscious thought. My family, as well as my Dad’s physician talked a lot about this over the last 6 months. These are not death panels-these are families. I would be willing to bet that similar conversations and counseling is going on in Italy. Quality of life is the primary focus in cases such as these.

As has been stated over the last several weeks, the Coronavirus is not the only sickness Americans should be concerned about at this time. The Trump cult mental illness may be as dangerous to USA long term health as Coronavirus is to physical health.
