Originally published at: Trump Bullies GOP Hardliners As House Dems Stand Against CR Without Separation Of Powers Deal
A group of House Republicans met with President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday as GOP leadership is under pressure to get their whole caucus on board with a six-month “clean” continuing resolution House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has been pushing since Sunday. Johnson can only afford to lose one Republican vote and…
I remember when I used to like John Fetterman.
They’ll cave. Massie will get to be the performative no vote. Dear Leader demands it. They are cowards.
Trump and Musk will not stop withholding congressionally approved funding and spend federal funds the way they were appropriated.
The pee-pee president pissing on the US Constitution is the beginning of…
…the golden age of America.

The Simon Says clause
So, as a condition of voting for the CR and keeping the govt open, the Ds are going to demand language in the CR that the president and Musk not be allowed to usurp the power of the purse. Great, Except this small point – that Trump and Musk are already not allowed to do that. I guess the idea is that if they pinky swear, and repeat “Simon says”, then, as gentlemen they will then be honor-bound to stop usurping the power of the purse.
Of course the Ds are not going to stick with this rallying cry as they refuse to vote a CR and plunge the govt into shutdown. This strategy is designed to fail. And when it does fail, and D votes allow a CR that doesn’t contain the Simon Says clause, well, that will just prove that of course the presidency, and not Congress, has the power of the purse, because a majority of Congress will have voted to abdicate that power to the presidency.
“once people understand the necessity of it, I think they’ll get on board"
I’m waiting. What is the necessity of having a South African tear the government apart because it challenges his business model?
Shocking!
Don’t make me clutch my pearls!
Democrats are gearing up to cave. As always.
Based on what I read here, Trump will win this round.
“I’ve never voted for a CR, but I’m willing to consider it to back the president, if necessary, if it gives him some wiggle room,” Burlison said, adding that he wants to “get to a place where we actually cut spending.” (emphasis added)
Party over Country…and apparently principles as well.
Party over facts, this is where we’re at.
In what should be a surprise to absolutely no one, Democrats are unable to to grow a spine, stand up for American values, and oppose the administration’s lawless behavior.
Every Congressperson and Senator should be out ahead of this, getting on any platform they can from local chambers of commerce to social media, explaining that:
- This is a vote about who controls the budget and right now that’s an issue that’s under attack by the administration;
- Congressional Republicans are abrogating their duty and allowing the President to act as a monarch, not a co-equal branch of government; and
- Until there are guarantees included in the bill that the funds allocated by Congress will be spent as allocated and not unlawfully withheld by the administration they cannot vote in favor of any budget resolution.
Unfortunately, what we’ll get is a lot of wringing of hands and whining about breaking of norms, maybe even a press release or two.
Edited to add : The tone of the most recent Backchannel is exactly the tone we should hear from elected Democrats
We already have a Separation of Powers deal. It’s called the Constitution. By asking for a deal to take care of the deal that’s been in place for a couple of centuries and is being ignored seems weak.
The United States is dead. It’s over.
Apparently, his stroke turned him into a Republican. Sad, and horrifying.
A guarantee that Musk-o-Trumpo will follow the law? from Republicans in Congress? When they have never before had any leverage with these guys? And when these guys revel in breaking agreements, laws, treaties, the government itself?
I like the general concept of “holding them accountable”, but really – HOW? Does Congress have its own police force or army? Do they have their own jail? Because in the current environment, they need both. Plus courts.
The only ‘agreement’ that works with Trump is payment in advance.
Pro tip to Fetterman: Voting to enable Trump is a vote for Chaos.
Why would Trump want a CR that basically extends President Biden’s budget until the end of FY 2025? Only because he thinks he and Shadow President Musk won’t be bound by it.
We need a government shutdown.
