How HW Bush dealt with the end of the Cold War deserves a lot of praise outside of how Russia was handled. There wasn’t excessive triumphalism and spiking the ball from the West. Obama often mentioned how he was influenced by the HW Bush and General Scowcroft. Also the slight decline in defense spending, what was seen as a peace dividend helped to reduce the federal and pentagon’s payroll, along with the Gore led reinventing government, far more than Doge of around 400k employees. That reduced spending on defense, a lot of it being wasteful sunken costs was channeled into federal research and development and the larger economy thus giving us a broader based prosperity.
I’m reminded of a long ago first responder trainer who suggested (only half facetiously) the merits of a “bilateral pulse check of the neck” to calm an agitated patient. Just squeeze until they go dark…
Watching birds out my front living room window. There is a white wing dove who is convinced it can fly into my living room. It’s walked up & down the outside window sill looking for a way in and flown against the glass (gently) three times to see if it can fly through… must be a republican bird… dense. Now sparrows know better. There is one sparrow who peruses the sill for insects but isn’t looking to get inside like that stupid dove.
That’s really interesting!
Well, @darrtown, ever since that dove’s ancestor returned to Noah’s ark they’ve believed they’re welcome inside.
Their greatest plus is that they’re tight-lipped about it.
I don’t mistreat critters. When I catch lizards in the house I carefully remove them to the front yard. There is an Arizona spiny lizard I have a nodding acquaintence with. He’s 2 yrs old and bigger than the others of his kind. In his first year he broke his tail. I caught him and adjusted the bones as best I could. Now the other spiny lizards run when they see me but not “Big Spiny” as I call him. It’s obvious he has no fear of me. And that’s cool. I do draw the line on mosquitos however. In 1992 during a trip in Southern Mexico one of them gave me a dose of malaria that took months to get over. So now it’s death on sight for “skeeters”.
Here’s “Big Spiny”

It meshes with many people’s idea of a necessary condition for a good lyric poem.
