Their base is mostly evangelical and this is how you lose it, by getting mushy wrt the policy they care about most.
Doesn’t mean they’ll vote Democratic but it can mean they may go to church instead of the voting booth and, with the possible exception of the reddest of red counties, that’s about all we’ll need for victory in national and local elections alike.

If you are morally opposed to abortion because, as every Republican says, it is murder, there can be NO moderation on abortion.
That is either abortion is murder or it is not. If abortion is murder, if you truly believe abortion is murder, you cannot compromise or moderate your position under any circumstances.
If, on the other hand, abortion is not murder, then what the hell have we been fighting over the last 40+ years?
That is if the anti-abortion crowd ever comes down from its position that abortion is murder, they will have admitted to being liars and fraudsters.
But most Republicans already know this and that they are fraudsters. That is until Dobbs many Republicans, especially White women, were able to be as righteous as the Pope on the issue because they felt safe in the belief that regardless of what the said in public and who they voted for their rights to have and access to abortion, birth control, reproductive rights and freedom to do what they chose with their own body would not be affected.
But unlike the Pope who cannot get pregnant and is suppose to be celibate, they mostly enjoy sex and can get pregnant.
Which leaves Republicans with “the problem with true believers”. While they are a minority within the GOP, they are a significant minority and without them, morale people who because of abortion support Republicans and their most immoral policies, Republicans cannot win national elections.

The thing I love about the Harris/Walz comms team is that they have been saying out loud the things that Dems have been hoping people pick up via brain waves or something. My guess is that they have all those videos of the extreme positions ready to roll.
