Originally published at: Trump And His Allies Follow Well Worn Playbook To Gloat Over Devastating LA Wildfires - TPM – Talking Points Memo
As a series of devastating wildfires ravages parts of Southern California, Donald Trump and his allies have seized on the moment to gloat, spread disinfo and politicize the still unfolding tragedy. The fires, which began Tuesday and have spread rapidly due to 80 miles-per-hour Santa Ana winds, have so far killed five people, destroyed thousands of…
Remember the 2015-2016 Presidential campaign when the criticism of DJT was that he “lacked the required temperament to hold the office of President of the United States?” Ah, the good ol’ days!
Tedious repetition should be sufficient justification to ignore it yet, every time it seems, each outrage becomes another set of lurid headlines. This suggests a different kind of analysis might be more accurate, perhaps something along the bread and circuses line.
The normalization of the extreme and outright crazy could be a signature of the century thus far or a decade of it at least.
To state obvious, this is going to be a rough couple of years. This is what lacking empathy and willful ignorance brings.
We need someone of stature to stop playing footsie and say out loud, “Donald Trump is a disgrace to humanity and everything decent and the best thing he can do is shut the fuck up and get out of the way,” Someone, anyone. Where is our “have you no decency?” moment?
Of course his supporters are unaware that the dams are over several mountain ranges and about 600 miles from LA, and that SoCal has gotten about an eighth inch of rain in 8 months. Many of them may not be able to conceive of what 600 miles is. Not to mention zero concept of why extended drought contributes to wild fire danger. Never mind that they want govt out of people’s lives so basically they voted against supporting fire fighters or inspections and brush clearing.
We need a new “weird” to describe this stuff. It’s outrageous, but it’s what they do and will always do, no matter what. Their predictability can and should be used against them.
There’s no empathy or reality or kindness or restraint left in the nutjobosphere. Outrage against them does nothing. They see democracy as weak. Their endless game of finding ways to blame Democrats and normal people for every hangnail they get has to become the subject, not the contents of their latest outrage accelerant.
He, they, it is my hope, have something horrible happen to them and no one cares.
"Newsom’s office clarified in a post on X that no such document exists and that the claim is ‘pure fiction.’”
We’re well past the time when such “clarifying statements” should include additional clarification that Trump is a serial liar and sociopath who celebrates cruelty and feeds on the suffering of innocent people.
Seriously. Say it over and over and over. So it’s always in everyone’s mind. Brand the m—er f—er.
Roy Cohn figured out that one, and programmed TMF to be immune to it.
And almost every major water supply reservoir in California is filled above historical averages. These asses know not of what they talk.
The GQP playbook:
Step 1. Be a total creep from hell.
Step 2. Do preceding step moar bigly.
Step 3. Enjoy repeating Step 2 ad infinitum/nauseam.
Pro tip: Apply to all situations everywhere all the time, especially those where people get hurt.
The best thing to do with the California wildfires is to find a charity that you feel comfortable donating to that will be on the ground to help the survivors now and in the future. One that I particularly like is UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief). They rate well with charity navigators in that their donations go 100% to the causes at hand.
Find one you like and start contributing. It’s going to be a long slog and will be a slap in the face to the MAGAts who insist that California should just be allowed to burn without intervention.
What was needed during Covid was someone like Biden saying, ‘Millions are dead and it is ALL DONALD TRUMP’s FAULT!!!’ No hedging. Say it plain.
That opportunity will soon come back. The next mass shooting I want someone of importance to say, ‘There are 10 dead 1st graders and it is ALL DONALD TRUMP’S FAULT. He has been President for years and kids are still dying every day.!!!’ Same goes for the next fire, hurricane, or - and especially - the next time a military member or veteran commits an atrocity. Lay it all loudly on Trump. First Dem politician who does that is serious about being the next President.
I shudder to think what the FEMA response to California disasters will be under Trump. We’ll be left on our own if the big earthquake comes in the next 4 years (which will obviously be Newsom’s fault for not fixing the San Andreas fault).
You’re presuming there will BE a FEMA to make a response to disasters under the Pres-Elect. I’m making no such presumptions.
I predict Chris Murphy. He’s been on a serious roll lately.
But you omit the essential role of adequate infrastructure to deliver the water to where it is needed when it is needed and perhaps most importantly in the quantities needed.
Fire hydrants we’re not designed to deliver the quantity of water needed to extinguish fires of this magnitude.
He or any of the Dem senators just re-elected would be good choices - it’ll be five years before any of them have to start campaigning for re-election. Plenty of time to do the good work of exposing the emperor and his wardrobe, of sorts.
Every lip-fart from one of these born-rich narcissists is broadcast far and wide. Speaks more to the absolute hegemony across all media outlets.
There is no winning the war against a majority paid in cash or self righteousness and barrels of ink almost no cost at all.
Recipe for fascism: disaffected population, absolute media hegemony, classic White Protestant hate figures to blame, and…amphetamine use.
You didn’t think those companies only sold downers -
