The Trump administration escalated its defiance of constitutional government on Monday as a judge sought details on a case addressing federal authorities’ removal of dozens of people from the country over the weekend without due process. A Trump Justice Department attorney asserted to a top D.C. federal judge at a hearing Monday afternoon that the…

The Judge needs to hold the officials in the administration responsible for this policy in contempt, and order them detained.

Absolutely. And subpoena their supervisor so they can explain why it is their underlings don’t understand how a courtroom works. I’d also expect the DC bar to look into attorneys defying a federal judge.

The collapse of opposition in Congress
and the speed with which Trump
has managed to eat through limits
on the executive’s power
has left judges as a final body of independence.

Terrifying. Especially with this Scotus.

That’s the only way this stops (IANAL). And no more normal timelines. Give them hours before they can do more damage.

It’s time to stop calling this group of thugs an administration. I refer to this bunch of lowlifes as members of a regime, but really they are a criminal gang.

Indeed. Boasberg is being way too nice. He’s obviously under the mistaken impression that fascists adhere to well-established judicial norms, rules – laws.

They’re playing by the Kim Jong Un Rules of Golf: play your own course, write your own rules, keep your own score, win your own tournament (probably your last), award yourself a trophy, call it a “Gentleman’s Game” and go home.

The judge ordered the DOJ to answer a series of questions by noon on Tuesday. The government suggested towards the end of the hearing that it may continue to refuse to do so.

The judge needs to give those attorneys mandatory government accomodations until they answer all his questions in full.

When Pam Bondi’s DOJ sends a lawyer to defend Trump’s lawlessness, “they’re not sending their best . . .” Of course their best have already resigned or been forced out.

Congress is not built for an attack on Civil Society like this. It is really the lawyers, scientists, and civil servants that are in the administration’s crosshairs. No Senators have been fired. What we need is a Resistance, not a political party.

Once they get the courts sidelined it’s over. The only reason anyone (who is not already a criminal) really wants to come to this country is was for the rule of law. Habeas corpus. Without it everything goes down the shitter.

Any official who refuses any judge order should be held in contempt and remanded to the nearest lock up. Refusals should also be kicked up the line until something reaches SCOTUS, the fools who gave Humpty Trumpty carte blanche.

It will exist, like Russia exists. Stay on the right side of the strongman and have a light complexion and life can go on. We find out in the end that the Constitution meant dick without honest/honorable people.

Pretty good quote.

Back in November, my colleague Tom Nichols invoked the Peruvian politician Óscar Benavides. Though he’s little known in the United States, here are a few striking facts about him: He served as president twice, first coming to power not through a popular election but through appointment by an elected assembly. Some years later, he returned to the presidency as an unabashed authoritarian. (Hmm.) “For my friends, everything; for my enemies, the law,” goes a quote sometimes attributed to Benavides. It could be the motto of the Trump administration over the past four days.

And he needs to do it verbally, just to make the point.

“I find you in contempt of this court, and direct the US Marshals Service to take you into custody immediately. How you like that verbal order?”
