Top VP Contender Rep. Karen Bass Denounces Past Cuba Comments | Talking Points Memo

So many better known, less-easily defined and marginalized choices-- for Joe’s VP selection.

If the goal is making the GOP spend more time/money on oppo research? Then Karen Bass being bandied is good business.

Otherwise, not so much.

I am having trouble understanding why well-regarded persons can’t fashion a straightforward apology.

It always begins with: “I was wrong for having done/said (fill in the blank)”.
Very next sentence is: “I am sorry for having done/said so.”
Followed by: “I sincerely apologize to (name of individual or group of persons wronged)”.
Followed by: " I pledge to work at not repeating this kind of wrong speech or behaviour".

Nothing else works as well.

This is a full-on disaster!

Clearly, she’s the only qualified candidate for VP and now we’re totally –

Oh, wait a minute…

It’s frustrating that we can’t have a rational, reasoned discussion in this country about certain topics, but that’s reality. You’re just not permitted to say anything good about Cuba, including their healthcare system which is pretty solid. But it’s good we know this now, and not after a nomination.

She’s out for 2020, but I’d say she has a chance to reinvent herself for 2024 and going forward with the right messaging.

JFC, why does America crush itself with special interest groups? A gal can’t even speak her mind and heartfelt truth without having to recant it to suit some kind of normal but backward attitudes.

Cuba may not be perfect but let’s face it folks, if not for Castro Cuba would still be the playground of the Mafia, your wealthy gamblers and sex tourists.
Viva la revolución!

… without a vicious political opponent using it to tarnish her running-mate.

Agreed. Sad thing.

Republicans are awful loud when it comes to folks supportive of Castro, yet are awful quiet when trump defends and slobbers over Putin.

Not sure why the daily caller released the Scientology video. Bass must be a real threat and they knocked her off before she could be officially chosen. Or they squeezed the trigger prematurely. Either way, it looks like she will no longer be under consideration. Personally, I dont give a fuck because Biden has my vote no matter who he picks. But I know there are a lot of folks that need be enthused and excited and feel all tingly all over in order to get out and vote.

OMG, I had not even seen the Scientology thing. Incredibly disqualifying just due to the sheer stupidity of pandering to David Miscavige’s sorry ass.

IMO, can we just stick with Susan Rice?

‘Top VP Contender’ in the article title is somewhat different from ‘one of the top VP contenders…’ in the lede of the article body. A fine distinction perhaps but still distracting. Sorry. Carry on.

The Cuba thing is politically problematic. Not necessarily bad policy-wise, but why even go there when Biden has a real shot at winning Florida?

But the Scientology thing is just flat out disqualifying. End of story.

Too late. Castro died 4 years ago. Now she denounces what she said when she’s in contention for VP? If it really was an error on her part, she should have done it years ago.

Aside from the issue itself, I am surprised she didn’t tell Team Joe herself that it would cause problems.

There will be plenty of other slots on the Biden Train after Nov 3.

That’s right: The Transition will be the Greatest and Most Comprehensive ever. We’ll be so busy, Trump and his criminals will be on a separate track.

Nope…

In time these things will become rather inconsequential

  • past travel to Cuba
  • condolences offered after the death of Fidel Castro at age 90

… let’s hope that Karen Bass is insightful enough to genuinely appreciate the long term benefits she will gain from this interlude in the spotlight - the strong sunlight & time will dissipate much of the ‘stigma’ of these pieces of past history … and put her in a far better spot in the future - she will be seen as having been viable because she was in consideration and having ‘addressed’ these matters … certainly sufficient to be able to run for Senate if she were to want … or some other higher position.

But right now - in this moment - right or wrong - they still matter to a portion of the population that otherwise would be willing to entertain the thought of voting for Biden. Right now this could be one of those rare factors that could get a group of voters to have their choice be tipped in a different direction by the VP on the ticket.

This is NOT the time that Biden will pretend that he is Kevin Costner in “Tin Cup” and ferociously attempt something super dramatic & high risk - and try to clear the huge water hazard - not when making a prudent choice puts the championship nearly in his pocket! With every ounce of his being - Biden is going to seek make the wisest, most intelligent choices … and will do his best to avoid unforced errors.

Bass would be a fucking disaster as VP. The worst part about this interview is that Floridians will hear her comments about the Cuban health care system and immediately think ‘socialist’.
