To hear Republicans tell it, it was just another Monday.
The leaked draft opinion, showing that a majority of Supreme Court justices voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, was the almost-culmination of a decades-long right-wing battle. After incremental progress, high-visibility defeats and bloody-knuckled election fights, the anti-abortion movement is getting exactly what it wanted.
It’s no big deal because, at least to Alito and those who think like him, all that needs to happen is for all the fornicating sluts to stop having promiscuous sex. Then the sluts won’t have to murder the babies created with their sins!
If boys have sex, it’s human nature. Boys will be boys, right?
It’s crazy to think that the grandmothers of young women today will have grown up and lived in a more modern world than their granddaughters.
The Sarandons of the Democratic Party have their hand in this, too. Perfect-Is-The-Enemy-Of-The-Good requires also the mature reasoning to not go overboard with it.
We have at the very least contributed to the misery of innocent people
Republicans are on their back foot because this caught them by surprise, before they had their talking points aligned and distributed. That’s why it’s weak tea. They thought they had a few more weeks, and they’d know for sure what was in the decision so they could formulate a strategy to defend it. Defending this draft is risky, when the final decision might be at least a bit more nuanced.
When the actual decision comes down in June, I think we can expect a more forceful defense. It will still be bullshit, but it will include all the tropes and red meat the GOP base wants to hear about “state’s rights” and baby killers in the Blue states.
Republicans trying to minimize and contain just reaffirms the sentiment that Democrats should not just make this about abortion or even women’s reproductive rights (yes very important) but tie it constantly also to “Where the threat is to You” for JoeSixPack, that his privacy to watch porn and buy rubbers is at stake (etc).
Make the full potential toxicity of this clear and evident, and make it a millstone.
Bubba of Megachurch Every Sunday probably is not convertible but that’s the 30% hard core.
As part of the Pence statement he said that there have been 63 million abortions since Roe. I often wonder how he and the anti choice brigade arrived at the figure. Are they including stillborns, miscarriages and ectopic pregnancies? Number of missed periods?
There have been 200 million child bearing teenagers and women alive over the past 50 years so does that mean 1/3 of them had abortions or had problem pregnancies?
