My heart is with Pete. He’s smart and makes an excellent, polite, attack dog. His being gay could be a negative, but I don’t think it should knock him out of the race. The larger negative is that Michigan is blue, maybe not by a lot, but enough that I don’t think Pete will be necessary. This is also true of Kelly who has the added disadvantage of having to be replaced. Yes, the governor will name a democrat, but then there will be a special election and we will get Kari Lake hoping third time’s the charm. Cooper has been term limited out of the Governorship in North Carolina and NC is still pretty swingy. He may bring the most to the table, in practical terms.

Every race you cited was open. Of course in an open year you have two new tickets. This year we have Harris, who was the running mate until a situation that is almost unprecedented in modern history a week ago and Trump, who is the first former president to run for nearly 100 years and ditched his prior running mate. I feel pretty safe calling this a virtually unprecedented way for this to go down!

You know, I looked it up and her visa was sponsored by this guy, Paolo Zampolli, who ran a modelling agency in NYC and then “went on to form a partnership with the Trump Organization as Director of International Development.” A Gawker article explains what his models did:

Trump & Co have loudly, proudly declared they are waging a culture war. The Harris/Buttigieg ticket says “game on”. Since reproductive rights, marriage equality, and gun safety legislation all poll in the 70% to 80% range, I think it’s the dream ticket.

Impressive as he is, I don’t see Mayor Pete bringing in a substantial number of new voters that VP Harris can’t already get. As to Rust Belt governors, choosing one of them in hopes of getting their electoral votes is playing small ball in an election which is nothing less than a referendum on the future of democracy in the United States. The best choice, IMO, is someone such as Gov. Beshear or Sen. Kelly who can broaden the coalition and make the Democratic Party competitive in many states.

Love Mayor Pete. Think he would be great. But not now. Too much is at stake. Have him give an amazing address at the convention like Obama did in '04. Keep him in the Cabinet where he’s doing well and getting national exposure. As @jkrogman said the bigotry here runs very deep.

First, welcome glad to have you on board. My worry with Beshear is that I’m not sure we can get another Democrat in as Governor in Kentucky and they and we need someone to keep the Blue going there. I just don’t know if Beshear is a sign of things to come, or a Joe Manchin, i.e. the only Democrat who can win in a Red State.

I love Buttigieg, and if you’d asked me a week ago, I’d have touted Harris-Buttigieg but I’ve become a huge Walz supporter. (I don’t think Kelly has the charisma, and labor hates him, and I worry Shapiro will turn off all the youth enthusiasm becuz of Gaza.) I’ve been blown away by Walz’s TV appearances–he’s just an incredible communicator. Rapid-fire, smart, but putting issues in plain, even humorous terms that anyone can relate to, like the other side is just WEIRD. He went on Fox last night and just killed. His bio could not be better for the moment: former high school teacher, football coach, veteran, but very progressive governor who’s passed a TON of great legislation with a one-seat majority in state house. Labor loves him. He’s red coded but actually progressive to his core. Even if he’s not from a true swing state, he’s from heart of the midwest. I didn’t know much about him until the Veep sweeps but again, he’s totally won me over–has all of Pete’s positives and none of his negatives. The ticket even sounds good becuz of his one-syllable last name: Harris-Walz. Fwiw.
