Not Just a Problem for Democrats Right-wing politicians in the U.S. have for decades pursued forms of voter suppression under the theory that the voters who are less likely to be able to overcome various hurdles to cast a ballot are also the voters more likely to support government spending or lenient immigration policies. - Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA), who has opposed some of the excesses of the MAHA movement (though did vote for RFK Jr. to head HHS), has said he has “strong concerns” about Overton’s involvement in…"
Depending on Cassidy is an exercise in futility
Why does the US think it needs to do even more voter suppression? American voters are pretty passive as it is. Not all of the 240 million people in the potentially eligible national voter pool even bother to register (211 million registered in 2024), and not all those registered actually vote (154 million in the 2024 presidential). Ballots can be quite complicated reading comprehension exercises as representatives fob some of their work back onto the electorate. In high voter-participation parliamentary democracies such as the Nordics, registration is automatic at 18, early voting is convenient, and often the voting merely involves writing the number of a single candidate on a piece of paper in the privacy of the voting booth. Votes on election day are tabulated on site at the precinct-level, a process that takes a few hours, before being sent to the central facility for final checking. Discrepancies are rare and minute. The intent of rejected protesting ballots (e.g. write-in for “Donald Duck”) are clear. The rejected vote is not allocated, but the voter gets credit for trying to vote.
Oh no. Another “concerned” Senator who isn’t concerned enough to vote against a Trump supported measure.
speaking of MAHA
Newly obtained documents indicate that the US health secretary, Robert F Kennedy Jr, lied during two congressional hearings last year, telling lawmakers who held the key to his confirmation that a 2019 visit to Samoa had “nothing to do with vaccines”.
Letters obtained by the Guardian and the Associated Press contradict that testimony. In one he wrote to the Samoan prime minister before the trip, Kennedy explicitly said he wanted to study the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine in the Pacific island nation. In it, he used the words vaccine or vaccination eight times.
“I am writing this letter to you in the hope that we might be helpful to the people of your great nation,” he wrote, adding that he believed the deaths of two children there after an MMR vaccine could have resulted from manufacturing issues.
“I would propose my team conduct detailed health informatics assessment in Samoa of what happened with your MMR vaccines,” Kennedy wrote.
Kennedy’s Samoa visit – just months before a measles outbreak swept through the island, killing 83 people – has become one of the most controversial events in his career. At the time, he was leading a nonprofit known for its anti-vaccine activism. The visit was seen by critics as having emboldened anti-vaccine activists in Samoa.
“Part of the plan, Trump advisers and allies tell us, is to try to push Iran to the background, while hoping that gas prices come down even a little and that Republicans can shift the nation’s focus to more politically palatable topics ahead of the midterms,” [Jonathan Lemire and Nancy A. Youssef write](The Real Reason Trump Wants Economic Sanctions in Iran - The Atlantic).
So, they’re gonna try to hide what they think people don’t like so’s the voters will forget about it by the election. Nothing changes, nothing is redressed, “Folks’ll become inured to it.”
Pretty typical of this crew.
Sen. Bill Cassidy, do you remember “First, Do No Harm?”
Cripes, as if we needed another.
If you had to distill the socioeconomic shitshow in these nominally United States starting with Reagan this would about cover it: Policy built on ‘alternative facts.’
“But her nomination is already encountering some trouble.
- Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA)”
Don’t need to go any further on this one. Cassidy is a cave man.
“So this is kind of a flawed political strategy wrapped in a rather vocally charged policy from the president,” he added.
What we get from Trump over and over again is flawed strategy wrapped in a vocally charged policy. Here we have his attack on mail in balloting that will hurt his voters as much or more than Democrats. We also have a trade war with Canada where Canada controls the St. Lawrence Seaway. Inaddition think about the war in Iran where Iran controls the worlds oil supply. It isn’t just that Trump is stupid, his advisors are equally stupid, inexperienced, or afraid to tell the emperor the truth. So Trump is set up to lose over and over again and we all suffer. .

Costco has implemented an independent, on-site energy system at its distribution center in Port St. Lucie, Florida, taking the facility off the grid amid significant energy challenges in the United States.
It’s HHS Secretary RFK Jr. , baselessly claiming in an X post that Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro’s office “altogether fabricated” news of two measles deaths in his state.
I don’t know how much more that I can despise RFK Jr., but however much more hate I have, it still won’t be enough.
I posted the below a couple days ago in the Hive’s 2028 Election thread –
Senator Bill “I’m the Real Victim Here” Cassidy, never afraid to scold the intolerant Left or knuckle under to the fascist Right
Daaaaaamn…
Washington, Colorado, Oregon, and California all vote from home. Not just those who want to, all of us. How is Trump’s order going to affect us?
I get that in the East it only affects some voters. Out here it affect all of us. Please, TPM, do some reporting on this.
We have been trying to make sure the “right” people vote since the first white male landowner cast a ballot for another white male landowner.
Nothing to report on yet, because it’s being held up with lawsuits. The SCOTUS only allowed the planning to go forward, not the implementation.
It’s hard to imagine how the SCOTUS would issue a final rule saying it’s legal this close to the midterm election, with none of the vote-by-mail states having time to put all the systems in place to cooperate with a Federal database. Not to mention the fact that it’s blatently illegal on its face. Stay tuned, but don’t panic.
Not quite. Only if the other White Landowner was of the “right” denomination or Religion.
A Methodist? Never!
Thanks for post. She runs like Barry Sanders. Why are Repubs so worried about trans players beating the girls? This girl runs rings around the boys.
