Originally published at: The Outrageous House Republican Move to Enact Trump’s Vote Suppression Proposals By the Backdoor of Budget Reconciliation
This article is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis. House Republicans will bring forward this week a surprising and dangerous form of the voting restriction proposals that President Trump has been relentlessly pressuring Congress to pass for months. That act may well discourage or exclude millions of voters via draconian…
I have this lingering suspicion that the main motive for the save act is to have any entry-point at all to put any state-level election results to the SCOTUS. I.e., PA accepts the disastrous bargain because their other election funding has been vigorously cut (I don’t know this, just imagine with me), the election happens, and every single swing district goes to democrats. Each is thrown straight up to the scotus, who overrules all of them on whatever fantastical grounds they can churn out, or possibly without explanation. It can only get to SCOTUS because of the save act inserting some splinter of federal control into state and local elections. Am I wrong?
No. in effect You are right. The Supremes are traitors to the Constitution and they care more about fixing the election than having a free and fair election. Roberts was in on the fix with Bush v Gore.
There’s nothing fiscal about voting, because, fundamentally, the States run the voting so any money the oathbreaking traitors throw at them i incidental, the Feds have no standing to impose anything related to the vote.
And remember,as Josh hisself says, “democracy in this country cannot survive with the current Court in place.”
So the Court can make some ruling on the aptness of the gop buggering elections, but the States will have to tell them to eff off, and we’re off to the 2nd American Civil War.
I’ll happily take everything from the Rockies west, including Utah and Wyoming and Idaho coz they have nice places and we can call it United States of Freedonia.
The thing that scares me most about the current GOP is that these guys are no longer even pretending to ‘play fair’! People who lack any shame are really dangerous.
And remember,as Josh hisself says, “democracy in this country cannot survive with the current Court in place.”
Yes, and it underscores the need to abolish the electoral college one way or another. Five out of the six abominable Supremes were appointed by Presidents that would not have attained office by popular vote.
Also… I heard Greg Sargent, on his Daily Blast podcast a week or two ago, warn of this reconciliation back door for voter suppression, so I’m not shocked to learn of this ominous strategy.
