The Next Costly Battleground in the Conservative War for Total Parental Control

This story is part of TPM Cafe, TPM’s home for opinion and news analysis. In late February, the Wyoming House of Representatives passed a bill that would significantly change how schools, health departments and child welfare agencies interact with families. The measure would allow parents to sue municipalities and state agencies for financial damages if…

What happens when upholding one group of parents’ rights infringes on a different group of parents and their rights?
If some parents are successful in banning books, what about a different group of parents who want their kids to have access to those books?

Someone should sue that state for allowing school libraries for having books that talk about Christianity.

Fine.

Can those of us who haven’t bred sue the idiots who have and are raising morons?

Asking for a friend who is tired of self-absorbed, self-important, self-indulgent, selfish parents who expect single people to be constantly inconvenienced at work, on airplanes, restaurants, trains, buses, Target, and on and on, on behalf of their loud, obnoxious, rude spawn.

Yes parents -a lot of you have shitty kids.

The rest of us shouldn’t have to suffer because others are too stupid or were too drunk to figure out birth control.

People have made compelling arguments for banning the christian bible from schools under these kinds of laws. It is crammed with sex, rape, incest, human sacrifice, genocide, and dietary advice that would make Sec Kennedy proud.

What about the rights of the students in the school?Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District - Wikipedia

The Tinker test, also known as the “substantial disruption” test, is still used by courts today to determine whether a school’s interest in preventing disruption outweighs students’ First Amendment rights.

The Supreme Court famously opined, “It can hardly be argued that either students or teachers shed their constitutional rights to freedom of speech or expression at the schoolhouse gate.”[1][2]

As a father, I say human rights are greater than parental rights, and anyone who thinks they can ‘control’ their children shouldn’t be a parent in the first place.

Wyoming… trying to live up to Dick Cheney.

Patriarchy = Children are property.

Next, are these types going to get taxpayers to pay for educational materials that teach racism?

These parents have a right to make sure that their children are carefully taught!

Maybe I’m taking your phrase out of context, but at this point I think Dick Cheney is down.

And fixing up a nice bungalow for Donnie.
Who will be there with Dick before too much longer.

This should be called the “Right to Abuse your children” bill. It will shield any parents who abuse their children from one of the sources of reporting - schools.

Yeah, lots and lots about the parents’ “rights”, but precious little about their responsibilities. This law will free parents to beat, starve, and sexually abuse their children – because that’s just Old Testament Parenting. Moses 101.

One parent not liking a book in the school library and the whole state needs to strip it from their shelves. Because whoever heard of “age appropriate” material?

And sure, lefties could “fight back.” But with what money? And what law firms? The right wing currently has those sewn up.

It won’t be an easy fight. We shouldn’t kid ourselves.

Not really total parental control. It’s lowest common denominator control.

But reproducing makes you wise! How dare you question the judgment of someone who figured out how to have unprotected sex.

the judge in Mahmoud awarded the parents $1.5 million in damages, to be paid by Montgomery County schools.

…to be paid at least in part by the taxpayers bringing the suit. So, winners will be taxing themselves to pay themselves.

Nice racket.

Asking for my friend, Bubba.

If Bubba Jr. is benched from his starting position as QB at Dick Cheney Memorial HS, can Bubba sue because the Coach is a moron and hurt Bubba Jr.’s future earnings?

I’m completely sick of this shit. If you want your kids to be stupid and sick, keep them home and unvaccinated and fuck the Hell off!

STUPID PARENTS DON’T FUCKING MATTER!

Children are not the property of their parents, but that doesn’t apply in the U.S. The United States has never ratified the UN Charter on the Rights of Children. It is one of some 30 UN Conventions on human rights, anti-trafficking, the International Criminal Court, and other international agreements the U.S. has refused to join. This country follows the lead of our billionaire class, placing itself above or outside the law whenever the law is inconvenient.

Christian scientists advocate for parental control of the child’s health decisions, but courts have ruled that they cannot refuse immunizations or engage in practices that compromise a child’s health or safety. The anti-vax movement and the Wyoming House of Representatives are both trying to roll back childrens’ rights to safety and education.
