Word!
I just never knew it was so easy with so many people. I thought, because of movies and books, that con persons had to actually fool you somehow. He just asserts that he’s this and that, various things he obviously is not, and millions believe it. I remember when I was a kid and a family friend who’d been in the service in Germany came home. He was astounded that you could buy the famous “Pet Rock” in all the stores, thought it was ridiculous. But it was a triumph of marketing. You put a goddamn rock in a box saying what a good pet it makes ha ha and people will pay you money. For a rock. That’s pretty close to literally what Trump is.
History is filled with moments when a large swath of truly gullible people, looking for something to believe in because their own lives are so bad and so empty, find something so easy and yet so ludicrous to believe in.
I know what you’re saying and I see the dollar figures in the media, and this is a convenient shorthand to describe the impasse (the dollar figure may be Manchin’s primary issue), and $2.5 T in reconciliation plus the $1 T bi-partisan bill would be great, but …
Let’s keep the focus on the BIF and BBB plan as a package of legislation to address traditional infrastructure, climate change, education, health care, child care, green-economy jobs, safety-net viability, a little more tax code fairness, and other policy and program components and the degree to which we can achieve them at whatever final price tag they’re able to agree on.
Yep. Because life is pretty much always the double jeopardy round where scores can really change.
I’ll take “Saving the Country” for $3.5 trillion, Alex.
Master con men/women offer the mark something so attractive that the mark takes the lead in advancing the con. In essence, the con artist sets up a situation where people actively work to fool themselves. Mr. Trump offered the MAGA crowd a vision of a mythical America that had never existed and told them that they were the ‘real Americans’ and that all their beliefs and prejudices were correct. After that, all he had to do was stand back and count the money.
Yes, and would have the added benefit of, oh I don’t know, being an actual compromise between 1.5T and 3.5T. Most of us learned that in Kindergarten, if not earlier.
We will see, but it’s the pomposity of the so-called centrists that has been so galling.
Maybe they can break out champagne for the entire caucus when the work is done. That’s a thought.
- Jayapal spoke on having health problems that made her abortion a medical necessity. Bush revealed that she had been raped. Lee described how she had to obtain a back alley abortion in Mexico because Roe hadn’t been established at the time she needed the procedure.
- Bush closed her testimony with a powerful message: “To all the Black women and girls who have had or will have abortions — know this: we have nothing to be ashamed of. We live in a society that has failed to legislate love and justice for us. But we deserve better. We demand better. We are worthy of better.”
BRAVE STRONG WOMEN!!!
Will the Climate Change legislation and funding remain in the bill? If not… the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is coming uncorked, Greenland is in an irreversible state of collapse, the Arctic has melted and the West is STILL on fire.
Okay, carry on…
I should make it clear that rationally, sure, I get what they saw and why they responded. But emotionally I can’t reconcile that with how flagrantly buffoonish and inauthentic to put it mildly he is. There’s this strange divide between people who consider him a total clown and people who take every word at face value.
OT. It would be a shame if this fine gentleman was to kick the bucket…
Stating the obvious here, but it’s so much easier on store employees when the local government steps up with mandates. In my county we’re 74% vaccinated for one dose, but the risk level is considered high, mainly because all we have are a couple of rural hospitals that are jammed.
Back in August, the county went to a mask mandate for indoor shopping, so you can’t enter a grocery store or big box store without a mask. Makes it hard on the people manning the entryway, but easier on everyone else, and of course safer.
A few weeks ago the county and the one adjacent started requiring proof of vaccination for indoor seating at bars and restaurants. That caused some protests, and the county health director actually had to leaver home and operate from an undisclosed location due to threats. But the local restaurants are mostly handling it okay, I think relieved that they don’t have to go back to reduced seating that was killing their business.
Carl Bernstein was just on CNN this morning and declared that we are in a “Cultural Civil War the likes of which we haven’t seen since 1860”. If anyone can find the clip it needs to be shared and reposted.
He also described the GOP as “a Fascist Party who have embraced an ideology as dangerous as the Hitler Regime”.
I had a diabetes re-check with my doc yesterday1 and asked her about the booster. She told me, "Good idea, but there’s no particular hurry (I just hit six months post second-dose yesterday). So I’ll get it when my wife is eligible late this month. I wear a mask essentially everywhere I go, too. I was indoors without a mask Tuesday night for a brass band audition. I was behind a screen, the MD and someone else had their backs to me, 50 feet away. No substantial risk to me.

1 If anyone cares, everything’s good. My Hb A1c was 6.1%. The only thing a little off was RBC: low iron, low hematocrit, low RBC count. I donated a pint of blood seven weeks ago, so that wasn’t unexpected. I may need to go to 16 weeks between donations rather than 12, though. I’ll have to think about that. I saw her at 8:30 yesterday morning and had all the lab results before 5 PM. What a country…
Can he pass it along to his friends?
ETA. Sharing I’d a good thing.
It’s all inside baseball right now. This is how the sausage gets made every single time.
“To all the Black women and girls who have had or will have abortions — know this: we have nothing to be ashamed of."
Thank you. I’m not even a little ashamed.
Shame on you for getting everyone’s hopes up this early in the day.
Cori Bush is my new hero. She was simply magnificent. Our society has indeed failed to legislate love and justice for Black women.
Fingers crossed.
