I had the good fortune to visit this bad boy yesterday. Clearly, the most impressive recent piece of architecture in the U.S. and in a city with the best collection of built form we have. Everything about it was over the top impressive. It honors Barack and Michelle’s past with location, program and contemporary artistic thought. It serves the south side neighborhood with its gardens, public programs and even the ample seating/meeting spaces in the free accessible areas. I haven’t visited Clinton’s Arkansas library but with its raised, cantilevered form, it doesn’t appear to engage in the surrounding community. The Obama Presidential Center does this in a terrific way and every detail of the design is gorgeous. It’s worth a trip to Chicago by itself.
