But in the days since Moscow ordered the bloody assault on Ukraine, what started as a mysterious military symbol has become a sign of popular support for the war in Russia, and what analysts describe as the unfurling of a chilling new nationalist movement.

I hate the extent Russia is going to justify Putin’s lie by covering up the amount of deaths. Families deserve to have closure when they’ve lost someone important.

The Russians brought mobile incinerators. At least two have been documented.

Swastika wannabe?

No. This is the better symbolism than some celebrities centering all the attention on themselves.

I’ve read both, actually, and they are terrific–I teach the Vietnam War every couple of years. If you don’t know Artyom Borovik, The Hidden War, I recommend it. Borovik was the first journalist allowed to report openly on the war in Afghanistan. I think Mikhail Gorbachev was using him to break the truth to the Soviet people gently, preparatory to declaring victory and bringing the troops home, which was the only sensible course open to him…

It’s Putin who needs to learn about the futility of war but what he does know is how to lie to the Russian people about the cause and the nature of this war. No, it’s not denazification, but it’s what he tells them.

I remember hearing early on that some of the vehicles in the Russian convoys were crematoriums on wheels.

Sounds like someone I remember…who was it…oh, right, Donald Trump!

Margaret Thatcher waged war over the Faulkland Islands, though Argentina pretty much started it.

Would you tell me why the orange thing is introduced into nearly every thread no matter the topic. He’s best ignored.

Hopefully these examples of Russian soldier’s deaths will multiply 10-fold.

What we need to see is Russian soldiers refusing to move forward, and being shot out of hand by whatever passes for political commissars nowadays in the Russian army, like during Stalin’s reign in WWll! I’m sure the Ukrainians would agree with me that the only good Russian soldier is a dead one.

Enough dead Russian mutineers might cause a new russian revolution!

Yeah, and the old trope also goes, “well, at least the trains run on time”, but does anyone in an authoritarian state ever get away with complaining they don’t?

You may be right. Especially as his ‘empire’ appears to be fading. I’ll keep that in mind.

Most Russians seem more triggered by the loss of global brands or the ability to access Spotify and Playstation than by the fact their country has launched a war against Ukraine. Even Russians who have ethnic Russian relatives across the border in UKR simply don’t believe their UKR based family members when they tell them Russia is bombing places indiscriminately. The convos, as described, really aren’t much different than what we’ve experienced in the US among families on politically charged issues like Trump and COVID. It’s a country awash in and run under a sea of disinformation. That’s been Russia’s modern history in a nutshell. It’s a country run by spies and the main currency is lies. Lies are like the weak glue or staples that hold flimsy packages together, but can easily break apart, leading to chaos.

The sanctions are having a bigger impact in terms of forcing the country to acknowledge that there is a major war out there and that other countries don’t approve of what Russia is doing. At minimum, the sanctions have forced Putin to actually attempt to explain the war, the costs, lack of progress, losses, and foreign censure, which is sapping him of energy and focus.

Borrowing on a familiar conservative idea, if you don’t test for whether they have died or look for the dead, they haven’t. Casualties go down. There is a peace of mind that goes with not knowing.

Will put that on the list. Thank you. Watch out for teaching that commie anti war stuff when god forbid the dotard regains the White House. You will go to the camps along with those CRT teachers that are poisoning the minds and bodily fluids of our precious kindergartners.
