The CDC Only Tracks a Fraction of Breakthrough COVID-19 Infections, Even as Cases Surge | Talking Points Memo

Well there’s also the problem of if you don’t have symptoms, or even if you only have half of the symptoms, do you go and get tested?
The US initially failed in the creating testing, and then there was limited testing available. But now with people vaccinated there’s a bunch of us that that never got sick while waiting for the vaccine, but may have some symptoms, but don’t feel bad enough to get tested.
There really doesn’t seem to be a way to get the most accurate picture of infections, or breakthroughs unless we all are on a strict testing regime. That’s a lot of work. time, and money.

Well, at least this one is based on (marginal and misinterpreted) documentary evidence.

My sister’s reason is: “I got a flu shot once and still got the flu.”

And my nephew’s reason: Something, something, Lars Larson, Jesus, something, something.

Exactly. All the protestors in the health care industry who are using that as an excuse - as well as in private industry - sorry, Charlie.

We’re already at three shots less in than 8 months. I’m not so sure an annual booster will do the trick. Are you?
That may change if they can modify the mRNA vaccines as easily as they claimed they could last February. Remember the talking heads claiming that within two weeks they can crank out a modified mRNA vaccine last February?

We’re still getting the same vaccines without any modification 7 months later. And there is no hint or talk of modifying the mRNAs anymore. That discussion died down a few weeks ago.

ProPublica does such great reporting. From the article:

Under pressure from some health experts, the CDC announced Wednesday that it will create a new outbreak analysis and forecast center, tapping experts in the private sector and public health to guide it to better predict how diseases spread and to act quickly during an outbreak.

For pete’s sake, What does the CDC think its job is? It’s named the Centers for Disease Control. Not Bureaucracy for Disease Data Bungling and Inability to Communicate (DDBIC). If we have to tap into “the private sector and public health,” to get this done, maybe NIH should dismantle this agency completely and start over. CDC is feeling it is under pressure to do its very job?? :unamused:

This is a concept that the science-skeptical know-it-alls and literalists fail to grasp. That’s why they elect folks who say they know everything and don’t need science…

Covid is a problem because it is novel. Our body doesn’t know what to do with it.

Vaccine (and infection) makes it less novel to the body.

Over time our bodies will need less reminding, and that should coincide with infections dropping over time which will test our immune systems less.

Good question. Maybe CDC could set up a little sub-committee to seek outside people in public health to look into that question. Scuse my snark. Twenty-five years ago, the CDC would be on that “toot sweet,” because that was who they were…

Perhaps the CDC is still recovering from the Trump years. There’s bound to be a bit of a lag after that kind of trauma. For example It’s difficult to replace good people who left in disgust. Not to mention changes in data collection methods and intensity.

And of course, limited budgets. Projects get triaged.

That’s actually pretty simple.

Lower Vax rates means there is more covid to potentially be exposed to.

All in the midst of the biggest unprecedented shit show ever.

All things considered… they are doing ok…

ETA: I think maybe the head of FDA and CDC should not be political appointees. Or at least more like the FBI director.

It’s gonna turn us all into human magnetic tracking chips.

Or CT citizens are better at social distancing and masking, or all three. There’s a big sociological component here in that there are potential numbers of breakthrough cases versus actual and AR is realizing its potential better than CT (so to speak).

I know I’m not going to be able to stick to it but these kind of news updates (and in a similar vein the Afghanistan stuff) make me inclined to just stop looking at any news.
After all what I keep finding out is the same stuff over and over again.
Covid is a big deal, people aren’t dealing with it properly, be cautious, there are a lot of idiots out there in the world, etc.
Rinse and repeat.
All it really ends up doing is raising my stress level when I look at it and causing me to not get on with enjoying other aspects of life.
Doesn’t change my behavior or give me any new ideas about how to do anything differently than I’ve already been doing the last year or so.

“Novel”
That’s the key word. When the CDC said vaccinated folks didn’t need mask they were ignoring the possibility of an “unknown unknown” like the Delta variant.
We’re vaccinated but we can still spread it and get it. We’re still capable of creating more variants.
