The Attorney General Hits the Campaign Trail for GOP Candidates

The Administration Finds a New Way to Scoff at Watergate Earlier this week, one of our TPM reporters let me know he was tuning into the White House’s press conference. I was surprised when he told me who the fill-in press secretary would be that day: Attorney General Todd Blanche. I probably shouldn’t have been.…

I think we have won the war approximately 202.37087 times by now.

Yes. With an authoritarian president, his enablers, six corrupt Supreme Court justices, and a Republican controlled Congress and Senate who have abdicated all of their constitutionally defined duties to said dictator (on every day).

As many Repub candidates for Congress across the country try to distance themselves from Trump, I keep wondering. (I was just reading about the Senate race in Iowa There must be a way for Dems to send the message to voters that a vote for a Repub, no matter how competent and reasonable that candidate is, no matter how good they are at bringing home the bacon for their district or state (a short-term advantage), is a vote for Mike Johnson or John Thune, for Republican control of Congress, and for Trump and a continuation of his administration’s policies and corruption. The Repubs have used that strategy effectively, as when they demonized Nancy Pelosi. And they go further, demonizing Dems like AOC and Mamdani and then trying to make them the face of the whole Dem Party. Without unfairly demonizing anyone the way Repubs do, Dems should develop their own version of that Repub strategy.

We criticize mainstream journalism like the NYT for reporting extensively, for instance, on El-Sayed’s association with Hasan Piker but much less on Repubs’ associations with, say, Nazis and White supremacists. But how much of that imbalance is driven by Dem candidates’ failure to play up their Repub opponents’ problematic associations? Yes, in this campaign season Dems can play up the associations with Trump, but there is no reason for them to stop there. In Maine, for instance, Troy Jackson has focused entirely on Collins’ association with Trump. Why not add that she is associated as well with the party that brought us Mike Johnson and Brett Kavanaugh?

What I hope Democrats have finally realized that you can’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again.

That is Merit Garland coming in after Trump’s first term behaved as if nothing had changed when in fact everything had changed. That is whatever happens in the next election cycles and should Democrats manage to win the presidency in 2028, the DOJ will not go back to the way it was before Trump. Or to put another way, the expanded powers and politicization of the presidency and all agencies needs to be used by Democrats just like Trump and Republicans are using it today.

Only after the criminals are prosecuted can we even discuss returning to pre-Trump norms.

This. Too many thought J6 was an aberration and not a continuity.

  • A Russian oligarch funding Don Jr.’s wedding? “When you say, ‘Am I investigating,’ am I investigating what? And when you say this person is a friend of Putin, I don’t even know if that’s true or not.”

Well, if you don’t know if it’s true or not, then perhaps that’s what you should investigate, per your first question, asshole.
