Texas’ New Abortion Regime Upends Neighboring States

The abrupt illegality of most abortions in Texas means more than just an exponential surge in patients spilling over to neighboring states’ clinics — though that’s happening too.

This is a companion discussion topic for the original entry at https://talkingpointsmemo.com/?p=1392748

The Texas fascists are so proud to say ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ while at the same time saying ‘Instead, I’ll Tread On Thee’. In this case it’s a woman’s right to choose that the Texas fascists have decided to tread on.

They’ve also decided to tread on voting rights for all but those sworn to the fascist cult. Actually they demand dominion over anyone not a member of their abominable cult.

This is from the same people that insist mask and vaccine mandates are too invasive and the government has no business in medical issues.

It’s to laugh. Except it’s not funny.

This will be their undoing because the backlash will be swift and harsh.

In southern IL PP has opened a new clinic, it was suppose to be to take the overflow from the only abortion clinic in MO, which is in St. Louis. On the local news the now two clinics across the river has seen patients, and inquiries from TX women.

We cannot overstate the degree of harm dealt women in Texas by this extremist supreme court nor the future devastation soon to be visited on all of us by them.

But will it? Sincere question. I agree with you that most Americans are not in favor of this, but it seems the older the electorate, the more likely the backlash will be neutralized. I don’t think the 18 - 30 demographic understands what’s at stake here and they’re the ones this will affect the most. We’ve talked a lot about POC going over to the GQPland, which would have this ruling, and yet they’re as affected by it as the younger demographic.

I am holding my judgement on the success or failure of this until the midterms. If we go solidly red in Congress, both houses, I think the American people will have spoken. Maybe this just isn’t a big deal with the majority of the electorate. I don’t know. I think the economy and other things will rank a whole lot higher in who wins the midterms next year vs. abortion even moving the needle a little. More’s the pity, honestly, because once it’s gone, it’s not coming back.

This is why for many years now, I have said no woman should vote Republican. It boggles my mind that women continue to vote against their own interests.

I cannot understand why anyone would vote against their own interest again and again and again…

And deny or dismiss climate change. There’s a huge overlap. I’ll bet most of the movers and shakers are the same people.

Here’s the rogues gallery for climate change denial. All men, all white.

This article is bizarre. New Mexico is a state with fairly good abortion access, and serves many Texans (El Paso is 40 minutes from Las Cruces). Why is it completely absent from this discussion of “neighboring states??”

They don’t give a rat’s ass about this country, it’s their money they’re protecting.

Why would people cleave to Q conspiracies? Why do even smart people believe weird shit? It’s always been thus, but there’s a huge misinformation dissemination machine available now along with a political press ethic that largely refuses to call out lies and identify liars.

When it’s all one hears relentlessly like a steady downpour, it becomes true even if it’s not.

Goebbels, I think it was, was a master of propaganda. Look how well his process worked. T**** only killed half a million people; Goebbels killed over 6 million.

ETA (due to your link): and it’s so much easier with a complacent and complicit media. The point in the link - the media could point out the lie, but it’s too afraid or too money oriented to do it.

Sadly, I think it is because they are not smart enough to realize they are doing so. The GOP has so successfully dumbed-down Americans over the last 40+ years it’s frightening

A friend of mine whose family lives in San Antonio were returning to the family homestead in WV. Because the parents were old at the time (Dad has since passed away), they decided to drive rather than fly.

The first day of the trip was entirely spent, crossing Texas.

What does a swift and harsh backlash look like for you in Purple and Red States? I would expect maybe a couple of points difference. I doubt it will be enough to overcome gerrymandering, for example.

I’m leaning more toward what @becca656 expects. And more women will die. And the GOP won’t care and their voters won’t hold them accountable. And they will get away with it like in Florida or Texas or Alabama or Mississippi.

With the current state of play it will be a GOP led House.

Mr. Akimbo took the NYT quiz this morning and 97% knew about Meta and 87% knew why Biden was going to Europe. Meta is stupid, climate change threatens the earth. These are NYT readers. I am not feeling hopeful about this today.

I going to use this too for the anti-vaxxers, The loudest of them all seem to be younger than me, and my cohort was the last to get the small pox vaccination. But the anti-vaxxers also seem to be too old to have been able to get the hepatitis , or HPV vaccines.
Circling back to abortions the 18-30 don’t understand what’s at stake. They may have followed their state legislature’s fights over abortion, but haven’t tracked it nationally. And then they’ve never experienced it not be available, at least somewhere in the US.
