That is the best solution. With luck, we would go with all mail-in ballots for every election.

I hope voters care enough to be proactive under these unusual circumstances. Maybe I’m missing something in my happy blue tent on the left coast, but I don’t see anything sinister in what seem to be the intentions here: don’t go into crowded venues

That is set by federal law, only congress can suspend it. And then Trump and Pense’s terms are up under the constitution on Jan 20, 2021. No election, the speaker of the house becomes president.
This said, the answer is mail in voting. The republicans don’t want to do that because they are screwed by higher turn-out. Gonna be interested to see what republicans do. Does public health/safety trump their voter supression efforts?
Certainly in blue states - talking to you Illinois and NY - we need to push our side to do what WA and to a lesser but growing extent CA are doing - 100% vote by mail.

Vote-by-mail is not a solution if you force each voter to request a ballot for each election, which is what Texas requires. Ballots need to be sent to all registered voters, not just the ones who remember to request them by the deadline.

That’s a point I’ve been wondering about. Without an election, won’t Nancy’s term be over as well? Not arguing, just confused.

It is, with the caveat that each individual voter has to request an absentee ballot. The deadline to request a ballot for the May 26 runoff election is May 15, and it has to be either received by May 26 (if not postmarked) or May 27 (if it is postmarked May 26 or before).
For the general election, deadline to request is Oct. 23, and the ballot has to be received by election day or the day after if properly postmarked.

I’m just glad that we in Harris County are now under Dem management. We’ll have a better chance of having a vote.

We already have a lot of mail-in so it’s not like it’s a huge deal to convert it over to mail ins.

This is true, there absolutely will be a general election on November 3. But, per this week’s outstanding example of voter suppression in Ohio, who can say whether any actual polling stations will be open on November 3? Does Governor Abbott maybe think that El Jefe Maxima Naranja and Senator Cornyn will have an advantage in the mail-in part of the vote? After all, the deadline to request an early ballot is just a few days after early in-person voting begins. Maybe the GOP will push like crazy to get absentee ballots in their voters’ hands, then claim a public health emergency to close the early voting stations as soon as the deadline to request an absentee ballot is past.
We need to watch out for this shit, because it is coming. Voter suppression is all these assholes have.

have to agree - we can’t pick & chose when we want to practice the safety protocol
over the next 5 months (thru August ?) there will be lots of ham fisted things that GOP & Dem govs will do - blunt crude actions - lock downs - travel restrictions - event cancellations business closings - heck - if a governor of a state in crisis knew that there was a warehouse within 15 miles of a major hot spot - and that warehouse had 300 brand new - ready to use respirators - locked inside - that governor would issue an order to crack that lock and commandeer the entire inventory
There is going to be a lot of “Act” and ask permission later going on
- but hopefully most for the right reasons

Vote by mail. No request needed. For everyone. Nationwide.
It’s technically not a no-excuse absentee ballot, but anyone 65 and older qualifies, and I suggest that anyone can validly claim “Disability” as an excuse in the midst of an epidemic. As in, I am disabled because I am not immune to this deadly pandemic.

I keep seeing this, but the general election to be held this year includes all 435 House seats. All House terms expire January 20, 2020, along with Trump’s. So, what Speaker of the House? What am I missing?

I agree. We get mail in ballots automatically because we’re both 68.
We haven’t used them in the past but we sure as shit will now and there is no reason why they can’t mail them to everybody and I will continue to think the only thing stopping it is the GOP.
Of course! Abbott could call as special session next week to pass universal vote-by-mail and ensure that every registered voter gets a ballot. Ain’t gonna happen though.
