Doubtless.
Texas is a Super Tuesday state again in this nominating cycle. I am hoping Joe Biden wins big here on Super Tuesday. At the moment,Beto is down double digits here.
As AG, she performed her appellate responsibilities in a manner that ignored her oath to do justice and exhibited the trait I most despise of the prosecutors I most despise: dishonestly in an attempt to gain politically. Fuck her, the horse she rode in on, and anyone who supports her in a primary. She has absolutely no place in an executive role.
Third.
Harris, then GIllibrand, then Castro.
Personally, I think Harris’ attacked worked, but it was her immediately backtracking the next day that hurt her. And Castro’s attack has opened up some conversations. He just overplayed it and went over the top with the repetition of the memory loss line.
But this namby pamby attitude of “don’t talk mean to each other” is insane. This is an election, everyone wants to win, and everyone needs to be vetted. This is how vetting happens. If Biden supporters are getting the vapors from what Castro said, well…if Biden is the eventual nominee they are all going to die from heart attacks from what Trump is going to say to Biden.
Thank you Comrade.
Welcome to TPM (since you just joined on March 17th this year.)
Ask your handler for a better list of conspiracy theories to push.
Those old “DNC Favored Evil Corporate Hillary!!!” don’t get the job done anymore. We’ve moved on.
Castro’s act was no better than a drive-by shooter, and WRONG, to boot.
Castro did nothing wrong. Biden lied about his policy – repeatedly.
read the actual transcript of what happened. castro called out a lie Biden had told in the last debate about his plan not covering 10,000,000 people. Castro then explained that his plan did cover everyone, and explained the difference (in Biden’s plan, while people are eligible automatically, they have to “buy in” or they aren’t covered. Castro’s plan covers people automatically.)
And Biden lied AGAIN about his plan, and kept repeating the lie.
The candidate who needs to be winnowed ASAP is Biden. He’s not going to be the nominee – its glaringly obvious he’s not up to the job, and the more people start paying attention, the less support he will have. The other candidates are all staying in, because they know that Biden’s supporters will have to go somewhere, and each of them is hoping they are in the right place at the right time when Biden folds.
no. the Dem establishment and media pundit class are invested in Biden. The guy flat out lied in the previous debate, and no one called him out until Castro did. And Biden lied AGAIN – and Castro is the one taking the heat?
We all tell ourselves that what has happened to the GOP with Trump would never happen with Biden. But with each passing day the evidence of Biden’s unfitness for the President becomes more and more obvious – and his supporters continue to dig in, attacking anyone who dares to mention the obvious.
If Biden is the nominee, I’ll still vote for him – because he’s less unfit than Trump. But watching Biden, I’m increasingly convinced that he is the one candidate least likely to beat Trump, because he is the one candidate most like Trump .
It’s a bit ridiculous to talk about “the need for party unity” before a single vote has been cast.
This kind of decision leaves everybody looking bad. It smacks of machine politics.
Could a person possibly be more wrong?
Let’s start with the fact that Castro’s criticism was accurate. Biden was misrepresenting his own position, or, to be most generous, trying to change his position without anybody being allowed to note that it was changing.
Castro is allowed to notice this. And it’s utterly absurd to treat a comment about changing position into an ageist attack that, apparently, “isn’t allowed” or is, even more bizarrely, “no better than a drive-by shooter.”
It takes an incredibly privileged background to think saying something mean to somebody is morally equivalent to a murder. It’s such an over-the-top, obviously ridiculous accusation that I have to conclude that your purpose in making it is either to indulge an aura of victimhood or to try to bully anybody who dares resist the machine appointment of our front-runner.
Biden is a bad candidate. People need to come to grips with that. Of all our leaders, he’s probably the only one who could actually lose to Trump. He represents all the unacknowledged flaws of the Clinton campaign.
And treating criticism of Biden as morally equivalent to drive-by shooting is yet another flaw of the type we had to endure in 2016, and which ultimately was counter-productive to the point that it contributed to Trump’s election.
The way to win elections is not to violently overreact to any criticism of your favorite candidate.
So…we’re still in denial about that, eh? Even though the emails were made public?
Denial is a helluva drug.
Corrupt Democrats are not going to win national elections. The voting public isn’t that stupid - at least not the ones that Democrats need to win elections. And the other guys are going to vote R no matter what happens.
the parallels with Trump are pretty amazing.
You’ve got a vocal minority running around with their hair on fire, warning people that Biden (trump) is unfit.
Then you’ve got a majority who say “Biden’s (Trump’s) not my first choice, but I’ll support him because he’s not Trump (Hillary)”
And then you have a few actual Biden(Trump) supporters
It really is like GOP 2016 in a lot of ways. As with Rubio, the media is now ignoring Castro;s substantive criticism of Biden and his lies, and focussing on an “attack” while mischaracterizing it.
The worst part is that Castro was not attacking Biden about his age – the media projected their own concerns about Biden’s age onto Castro.
( Anyone who has ever dealt with a troll understands the frustration of dealing with someone who lies, and then contradicts what they’ve written 10 minutes previous. THAT is what happened with Castro. His reaction was a “real life” "YOU JUST WROTE THIS TEN MINUTES AGO! " response to a troll.)
puhleez. Party primaries are always about appealling to the people most easily motivated to turn out. So there is always a viable, non-establishment candidate on the left among Democrats, and always one from the right among the GOP.
The dynamic has not changed one iota, and anyone who thinks criticising a “Twitter primary” is somehow profound has only a surface understanding of politics.
that is NOT what happened. Castro called out Biden’s lies.
But because everyone is worried that Biden is not up to the job and is too old, they projected THAT concern onto Castro.
Castro became the vehicle for what everyone wants to say but is afraid to – and the acknowledgement of that fear of telling the truth.
That’s not what happened – both men seemed to be talking past each other – Biden insisting correctly that he said that people unable to afford coverage would be automatically enrolled and Castro referring to an earlier statement that certain classes of people would be able to buy in.
read the transcript. Castro was talking about Biden’s plan leaving 10,000,000 uninsured, because people would have to buy in. Biden then denied it… Castro noted that Biden had just admitted it, and Biden tries to elide the facts that Castro has pointed out…
CASTRO: …That’s a big difference, because Barack Obama’s vision was not to leave 10 million people uncovered. He wanted every single person in this country covered. My plan would do that. Your plan would not.
BIDEN: They do not have to buy in. They do not have to buy in.
CASTRO: You just said that. You just said that two minutes ago. You just two minutes ago that they would have to buy in.
BIDEN: Do not have to buy in if you can’t afford it.
Biden did not listen to what Castro had said. Castro had listened to what Biden had said previously.
if you lose the job from your insurance — from your employer, you automatically can buy into this. You don’t have — no pre-existing condition can stop you from buying in. You get covered, period.
Don’t blame Castro for not letting Biden get away with changing the subject – Biden had NOT mentioned “means testing” at any point that night (“if you can’t afford it”). Biden lied about his own plan, then tried to change the subject, and Castro did not let him get away with it.
I just don’t see enough “there” there with Harris. She’s smart, but I don’t see the breath of vision needed. And I don’t have the sense that she has thought long and deeply about a wide range of public policy issues. She’s good, but she’s not at the top of my list.
Right now, I’m leaning toward Cory Booker–the antithesis of Trump.
except that is not true. First off, you are not automatically covered in any instance. You still have to apply – although if you are Medicaid eligible, you can apply retroactively if you have medical expenses. But you aren’t “automatically” covered per se.
And if your income is above the Medicaid threshhold, you aren’t covered UNTIL you apply for benefits.
In lots of state, unemployment compensation alone is greater than the Medicaid threshhold – in other words, you are NOT covered automatically or retroactively if you apply. If you have medical expenses you are screwed, because you are uninsured.
And that is significant, because unless you have existing medical needs, when you lose your job health insurance becomes a non-necessary expenditure well beyond food, shelter, car payments, etc. (IIRC under Biden’s plan, insurance is mandated, and you would have to pay a fine when it comes tax time – but under original Obamacare that fine would be waived upon request unless you were well off.)
Go back and listen to it. Castro’s claim was specious and inaccurate. A drive-by shooting to gain him attention.
Trump turned his wallowing in the sewer to an advantage. He’d discovered several things:
-
Most Rs would do anything to stop a D candidate.
-
he was channeling the lowest common denominator, the rightward 30% of the country.
-
The media never thought to do one immediate validation of his claimed net worth. So when he threatened to spend billions of dollars of his own money, it not only made him credible with the base, but it got the R establishment nervous.
-
Even if the MSM were disgusted with Trump’s behavior, they covered it and this way Trump really did get many billions of dollars of free media.
This is the nuts and bolts part of health care coverage no one seems to want to talk about. ‘Automatic’ is nonsense if you need dialysis or chemotherapy and you are ‘waiting’ for coverage.
And he learned he could get away with virtually anything once he came into power.
either you have no understanding of the actual issues involved here
or
you haven’t bothered to listen to the ENTIRE exchange, within the context of what Biden originally said.
I looked for a while yesterday to find the entire exchange – starting with Castro’s framing remarks. All the clips that were available started in the middle of the exchange – or were just Castro asking Biden if he’d forgotten what was said.
The only source of the full exchange I could find was the full debate video – and the various transcripts.
Any honest person who familiarizes themselves with the health care plans in question, and then watches/reads the full exchange in context., is going to conclude that Castro was right, and that Biden lied – or at best, doesn’t understand his own plan.
