Tennessee GOP Hints Special Session Rules That Silence Minority May Become Permanent

I seriously doubt anyone would take that bet, since there is no way the GOP would take this being done to them.

If that’s possible, I say we return North/South Dakota to territory status, they re-admit them as one state “Dakota” also strip Wyoming of statehood re-admit them combined with Idaho.

I will never forget, not really forgive, Democrats for not making DC a state during the brief period they had a supermajority in the Senate and controlled the House early in Obama’s first term.

Yes, it was a short period and I’m sure there were some reluctant Lieberman / Manchin types who shut down the idea behind closed doors. But you know Republicans, if tables were turned, would have found a way to shove a vote through in the blink of an eye, probably pushing through the entire process on a random Tuesday morning and assigning temporary DC appointees to committees by lunchtime, followed by a fireworks celebration of American democracy, which in this case would be highly appropriate.

What whiny little paranoid trash. And then the ‘Speaker’ turns around and accuses Pearson of ‘shoving’ him when the tape clearly shows him striking first as the bully boy he is. Honest to Christ.

It was asked during one of the committee hearings and confirmed. GUNS are allowed in session. But no signs, they might hurt someone’s fee fees.

I’d like to respectfully request that every commenter on here who insists that this or that fascist law is illegal or unconstitutional or will be overturned or cannot be enacted to kindly either figure out that we are up against a truly evil form of fascism that sees Gilead as a model, or shut the fuck up. Because your constant belief in the magic of “America good” is just plain stupid. Unless you’re willing to fight - or at least see the danger honestly and clearly - then you are a huge part of the problem we face. So, unless you’re going to make it happen, keep your “this too shall pass” fairy tales to yourself.

a tool for silencing their minority colleagues

Can’t wait for 2024 when Democrats can do this to Republicans.

The GOP actually has a rule on matters having to do with majority/minority status: when the GOP has the majority, the minority has no rights and no power; when the GOP is in the minority, it’s tyranny I tell you tyranny, and the minority has the right to overthrow the government.
Simple!

That is such a myth it infuriates me every time I hear it.

Yes, there was a Democratic supermajority, for all of about SEVEN MONTHS after Al Franken was seated in the summer until we lost it thanks to the death of Ted Kennedy and a total fuckup by Massachusetts Democrats. And during that time we managed to squeeze out the Affordable Care Act, the most important piece of progressive legislation since the 60s, and lots of other progressive legislation besides.

The idea that DC statehood could have been implemented during that time is just plain ridiculous. For one thing, as you pointed out, non-Dem Lieberman and at least three or four others would never have gone for it.

“Blame the Dems” revisionist history like this does us no good whatsoever. You can’t “find a way” unless you’ve got the votes.

Why stop there? We could merge several low-population states into the turducken of the U.S.

Nothing says democracy like silencing minorities within the democratic process…are the recent stories about minorities opting not to vote for Biden really a thing…are people really so ignorant and vacuous as to want to perpetuate this dearth of leadership in TN and other shithole states?

Who died and made this Speaker President of Tennessee?

It seems like the DoJ needs to be investigating these abuses of their/our First Amendment and Representation rights.

Maybe that’s why they support Trump, he sucks up so much of their resources. He makes a large whipping boy.

If they really start silencing Dems, or suspending them for the duration, then each Dem should one-by-one stand up and be silenced/suspended. Then hit the campaign trail hard. Performative politics is a 2-way street.
