More than half of Republicans support Christian nationalism and believe the United States should be a strictly Christian nation — that’s according to a new survey from the Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institution.
Researchers found that half of Christian nationalism adherents and nearly 4 in 10 sympathizers said they support the idea of an authoritarian leader in order to keep Christian values in American society.
So, unsurprisingly, researchers found that supporters of Christian nationalist views often hold anti-Black, anti-immigrant, antisemitic, anti-Muslim and patriarchal views as well.
My favorite Paul Krugman quote is in regard to our current politics, “How did we get here? Wealthy elites weaponized White grievance to gain power and then used that power to enrich themselves at the expense of the very people who gave them power all the time scapegoating minorities.”
What this says article adds is that Republicans voters have two sets of standards and morals, one for themselves, White Christians, and another for everyone else. That is they support privileged and “those people” standards because they think the privileged standard applies to them and by the time they find the privileged standard does not apply to them it will be too late.
From the article, " The idea has been prominent within certain American demographics, especially since the rise of the Christian Right in the 1970s. The ideas grew in popularity mostly in reaction to changing demographics and cultural and generational shifts in the U.S, Kristin Kobes Du Mez, a history professor at Calvin University. According to Du Mez, as the country has become less white and Christian, the adherents want to hold on to their cultural and political power."
Or to put another way, “values” in front of the word voter is and has always been code for race which is why those espousing the values of Christ support Donald “grab her by the…” Trump.
Also from the article “So, unsurprisingly, researchers found that supporters of Christian nationalist views often hold anti-Black, anti-immigrant, antisemitic, anti-Muslim and patriarchal views as well.”
Or to put another way, the 7 planks of the Republican Party are:
Who is being credited with Christianity again? I see neither evidence of a single cheek turned, nor the slightest hint of a single enemy loved, by anyone who wants to brand themselves with the label. not even once. And damned little giving to the poor, either.
Exactly. I would love for someone to tweet out, “OK, obviously this means Catholics are in charge now, so the first law we’re proposing is communion for everyone,” then step back and watch the verbal bloodbath.
More Than Half Of Republicans Are Authoritarian Shits Who’d Love Theocracy As Long As It’s THEIR Theocracy
Other Breaking News: Water… Wet.
The only reason they’re even as unified as they are right now is they have an external enemy: Literally everyone else in the world. If they had their way, they’d quickly start cutting it up into narrower ranges.
First, the Catholics would have to go, because them damned Papists owe allegiance to a furriner from South 'Murca.
Then it’s the Episcopalians, cuz they’s just Papists For The King, and nobody likes Charles. Also, they’re perverts who believe women can serve God on an equal footing.
Then the Lutherans, cuz they’re too close that uppity black guy’s name.
Then the Methodists because *GAWDAMMIT, man! It’s called ACTING!! You should try it instead’a that ‘method’ crap!
Ok, I really can’t get too upset at the idea of the Christofascists going after method acting, that’d just be funny… BUT YOU GET MY POINT.
Using this (il)logic, many of the leading signers of the Declaration of Independence, and later framers of the Constitution, would not be considered to be “Loyal Americans.”
This is what happens in a country where one of the major political parties actively works to kill off public education.
Fascists don’t normally win popularity contests but that doesn’t stop them from gaining and maintaining power. Money and propaganda can skew even the worst views into a seeming majority.
