The Supreme Court on Friday let the Trump administration use its newly-expanded system to verify people’s citizenship status, which the dissenters argue both violates privacy laws and risks disenfranchising voters before the midterms. The order was unsigned; Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson wrote in dissent, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor. In a March…
Lolololololol I’m sure texas and floriduh have already fired up the disenfranchisment machine and run it on their lists. What are the courts going to do about it? Sternly worded letter after the fact? More confusion and chaos around the election, which is of course the goal to convince the MAGAts it was stollen
KBJ: “In my view, however, the harm caused by burdening or disenfranchising even a few lawful voters outweighs the nonexistent harm that the Government experiences when it is prevented from taking an action that it likely lacks the authority to take,” she concluded.
… the nonexistent harm that the Government experiences when it is prevented from taking an action that it likely lacks the authority to take,” seems like a viable dissent on a whole lot of shit that has come through this SCOTUS of late.
You know, I doubt the SCOTUS 6 (outside of Thomas) are truly on the take, but they are without a doubt the most corrupt Supreme Court “Justices” of our lifetimes.
I understand your pessimism; I don’t share it, but I understand it. Feel free to indulge it (not that you need my permission, of course, or anyone else’s for that matter) because I get that it’s cathartic, so relish it, revel in it, knock yourself out.
Just keep in mind, while you do, that doomposting has the undeniable effect of convincing some people that nothing they do matters, that their political activism, targeted donations, and even voting, itself, is futile.
Based on roughly 20 years of enjoying your digital acquaintance here at TPM, I’m guessing that’s not really your goal – unless, of course, you’re publicly advocating violence as an alternative, which (in addition, I’m guessing, to being a TOS violation) isn’t the “solution” some folks think it is.
Sure, we might be screwed, but we might not be. Let’s keep doing everything we can – short of armed revolt – to throw the bums out in November. Let’s not discourage trying, no matter how pessimistic we might feel, because we just can’t afford that.
Every little scrap of effort counts more than we ever will know.
While this is an important issue regarding the coming midterm elections, voter suppression fraud, it may not even be the most dangerous Trump action to America and our democracy. The most dangerous issue to America NOW is because the USA still has enough democracy left to destroy Trump in the next 6 weeks, and that is what a Democratic takeover of both the House and the Senate would do, Trump is in total desperation to make some deal with Iran ahead of November 3rd.
As someone who negotiates contracts for a living, there is no better time to make a deal when you are strong and the other side is like Trump is today, weak and desperate. That is Iran is in the strongest position it will ever be in visa an American president and Iran knows it.
Iran, realizing how weak and desperate Trump is to make a deal ahead of the midterms, knows that a deal with a weakened and desperate Trump will likely be the best deal they will ever get from an American president.
Or to put another way, for $400,000,000,000.00+ of taxpayer money and permanent control over the Strait of Hormuz, Trump might just get a deal with Iran half as good as Obama got when he merely allowed Iran access to its own money that it had in foreign banks most of which was not even in the USA.
They don’t control who is or isn’t seated at the beginning of each Congress. As long as enough Democrats show up in Congress to represent a majority and say “we’re in charge now”, there isn’t anything the GOP can do.
We have good evidence that Alito and Roberts wife is. It wouldn’t shock if the rest were pocketing something from the FedSocs Billionaire Buddy system.
Mr trump. I’m an American voter. All registered and everything. I have a passport. Wanna see it? But first you gotta show me yours cuz I am not sure you have one.
He is not controlling anything, he’s offering the states an opportunity to use the (flawed) SAVE database. As always, election laws are set in place by the states and Congress, not the Dictator in Chief. He’s trying and he has succeeded in muddying the waters. If you show up at your local polling place and they try to prevent you from voting (which they will never do) simply ask for a “provisional ballot.” (Those will have different names in different states, in NY it’s an “affidavit ballot.” Don’t let MAGA propaganda prevent you from exercising your right to vote on November 3.
Who writes the headlines here? How about “Intrusive” or “Invasive” or even “tightened”? Same or fewer number of letters and without the implied positive language.
I respect Judge Luttig as one of the few Republicans who upholds his oath to the Constitution regardless of party, but I suspect he’s sufferring from Judgebrain here. His argument fails when you realize the assumption that the existing GOP House leadership and clerk can refuse to seat any Rep is false at the start of each Congress.
When the existing Congress expires at noon on Jan 3rd, 2027, that means everything goes, including Member Johnsons powers as Speaker and even the House rules. That’s why the first order of business for every Congress is electing a Speaker and passing the rules. Yes, the outgoing clerk “swears in” the new members, but that’s a ceremonial, not legal, process. At 12:01pm on Jan 3rd, 2027, all Reps who have been certified by their states are fully seated members of the House regardless what the clerk does. The House doesn’t get the power to deny the seating of any Rep until after the House rules are passed.
So to defeat any attempted GOP shenanigans here, all the Dems have to do is show up on Jan 3rd with their own clerk in tow and declare openly that if the outgoing doesn’t engage in a proper ceremonial swearing in of all new members, he’ll be immediately replaced with the Dem clerk who will do so. When there are no rules yet, the party with the most members who show up wins.
This KY twat is the Dean of the House and must swear in the new Speaker who then administers the oath en masse:
He will refuse.
VP swears in the Senate. He will refuse.
Voila…Constitutional crisis of epic proportions.
Remember: it’s not about whether it technically works. It’s about the fact that they’ll still try it and there will be millions who believe it worked…and the fact that SKKKOTUS is 100% corrupt.
