Supreme Court Just Okayed One Neat Trick to Illegally Gerrymander Your State

Biden’s point stopped being valid before his presidency had even begun. Guy got some good stuff done, but his inflexibility to adjust his thinking on a few fronts (the courts, Israel) will have lasting damage to the country.

Agree 100%. They will find another reason to nullify those maps and either ignore Purcell or find another superseding reason to do so. My money is on the CA maps being a racial gerrymander against whites.

We are not at the primaries yet. I might add that if a gerrrymander is illegal, then may be the onus of fixing the issue would be on the state that instituted it.

That said, practical matters may enter rulings of course. Like say, how corrupt a court is.

Just for the record, that’s one vote (Alito) for the Purcell fig leaf and five votes for enabling Republican bullshit without explanation just because they can.

Not that it was an earth shattering insight, but I believe I 100% called this. The secret to Gerrymandering in Republican states is to change the map too close to an election for the courts to weigh in. You can also bet that the SupCt is going to strike down Calif’s new map because the new map was created too close to the 2026 election. Thumb on scale. Same “logic,” opposite results.

  1. ‘Emergency’ is Republican double speak for we get to do whatever the fuck we want, be it tariffs or SCOTUS rulings that are unjustified
  2. Texas used to be subject to preclearance, but Roberts said racism was over so we can’t have laws to prevent it anymore
  3. My only hope is the Republicans have tied themselves to this bomb, don’t have the votes, and will lose so dramatically they will miss the 2021 maps. Given how much suppression they want to do I shouldn’t hold my breath

As soon as I saw that the new Texas districts were found to be unconstitutional, I knew the motherfuckers on the Supreme Court would correct that egregious error. /s

When is the next election too close? When it’s a red state. When is it not? When the state is blue.

On the next opportunity, we need to expand this piece of shit court. (And no Bidenesque hand-wringing allowed.)

Pardon coming up ASAP
Accused DC pipe bomber Brian Cole told FBI he believed the 2020 election was stolen, sources say | CNN Politics

During interviews with the FBI, the suspect arrested in the pipe bomb probe told investigators that he believed the 2020 election was stolen, providing perhaps the first indication of a possible motive for the bombs placed near the DNC and RNC headquarters, people briefed on the matter said.

One of the first things that will need to get done to reverse America’s decline if to have hearings on corruption in the supreme course and also start imposing rules of conduct on them.

But, but it’s the holiday season. Any pol, state or federal, can’t be expected to work this hard during the holidays. That would be so unfair!

I wouldn’t be in the least surprised if the MAGA 6 on the Supreme Court strike down California’s voter approved partisan gerrymander because . . . reasons.

If Democrats ever win Congress and the presidency they would be insane to NOT end the filibuster and pass Supreme Court reforms such as binding ethics rules and expanding it.

I’m for completely ignoring them. As the saying goes, they made their decision, let them enforce it.

That’s the beauty of the shadow docket. No briefs, no oral argument, no lengthy decisions trying to justify the unjustifiable. Just decree it to be so and move on to the next charade.

Alito will also note that while the Texas map is clearly a permissible political gerrymander, the California map is clearly an unconstitutional racial gerrymander.

Because they can. (h/t @txlawyer)

The headline on this article is the opposite of my interpretation of this.

To me, they seem to be saying that the Texas gerrymander was a fait accompli, so the “change” was actually reverting to the 2021-2024 map, and that “change” is “too close to the election.”

But California’s gerrymander hasn’t taken place yet. That means that, when it does, it will be closer to the election than Texas’s was. Therefore. They have given themselves a precedent to overturn California’s. And Virginia’s.

They are saying that you can’t make a change less than 11 months before an election.*

Yes, they’re planning to fuck California and everyone else that comes after Texas.

* That’s of course disregarding that most normal 10-year redistricting occurs less than 11 months before an election.

He said the magic words. Now Miller is warming up the autopen for that pardon.

Nope, they’ll be dusting off the independent state legislature theory. The new California map was directed to be redrawn by the voters, not the legislature, so it’s invalid.

Mark it.
