Grifters wouldn’t be welcome as Democrats. Republicans are happy to get any vote. Where did all those Southern Democrats go when they felt they weren’t welcome as Democrats? Lee Atwater convinced the Republican party to court them, leading to the demise of the more liberal Rockefeller Republican wing of the party.
