“For the anti-abortion movement, the goal has always been total abortion bans with no exceptions and constitutional recognition that a fetus has the same rights as a person, said Mary Ziegler, a leading historian of the U.S. abortion debate…”
When you’re doing God’s work, there will be collateral damage – an infant, here; a mother there, but God would want it that way to show you and the anti-abortionists His Love.
Interesting how a 12-year-old isn’t old enough to choose a library book, but is old enough to carry a child.
I find it particularly awful that, while women are telling their stories, GQP men are allowed to leave the room. These men should be tied to their chairs, a la ‘Clockwork Orange’, and be forced to witness to and hear every single word that is said.
A doctor cannot perform surgery on an ectopic pregnancy in some states. Isn’t that a death sentence for the woman? A teenage girl is raped by her uncle which results in a pregnancy. What happens to the uncle? He committed a felony.
The pro-life people are definitely not pro-life. They care nothing about the life of the pregnant woman. They are ignorant about women’s health issues… They are mean bastards who hate women. This is the 21st century, not the 19th century.
This is wishful thinking. Republicans are doing fine, they will most likely gain control of the Senate, they have a very good shot at wining the presidency(*), they could even retain the House, even though they have demonstrated complete incompetence. Seems like red-state white women are just too much into being members of Team Red, and will vote Republican no matter what. Look at Idaho, politicians are competing among them to see who will bring the most draconian laws, because they female votes for granted, and there is a reason for that.
(*) Trump is not getting convicted, and the fact that he is even with Biden, means that he is actually ahead. Many Trump voters are ashamed of admitting it, and will say they are undecided.
“I would never have possibly imagined that a bill protecting a woman’s life could be so contentious,” Rehfeldt said on the floor of the House, announcing she was withdrawing her bill before even bringing it to a vote.
She forgot that the anti-abortion zealots really believe what they say:
Their fervor to protect the laws reflects a bedrock philosophy within the American anti-abortion movement: that all abortion exceptions — even those that protect the pregnant person’s life or health — should be considered the same as sanctioning murder.
Especially when you’re working for a god who thinks nothing of demanding that a father prove his fealty by butchering his own son, then having his own son murdered as some sick blood sacrifice, not to mention committing planet-wide genocide because the people he created were having too much fun and playing that damned music too loud.
Thankfully for me, I do not share your pessimism*. We have beaten trump before and we will beat him again. Democrats have outperformed expectations (and polling) in the last three elections (2018, 2020, and 2022) and the odd 2023 elections. We have a lot of work to do and a lot of money to raise, but we will win. And abortion will be a millstone around the necks of Republicans for years to come. The Republican Party will continue as a regional party, but their period of national relevance is over.
*I can’t and won’t give into your pessimism. If trump wins again, I and most of the commentariat here will die in a Trump® brand prison-labor camp.
I somewhat skimmed the last 1/3 but I’m pretty sure the answer to all those questions is a resounding, “No, Never.” To support that conclusion, note that the article mentions lawmakers just get up and leave the room when the content of testimony before them becomes uncomfortable. Hear no evil about our total abortion ban, no, never.
Me too. Did a double take, read it again, still wasn’t sure. Read it twice more … oh, got it now. Not having seen this show may have made it harder to follow what was being said
