Just days ahead of a vote to convict or acquit President Trump, several Senate Republicans said Monday that they did not need to weigh in on the merits of the House’s case, because they have decided to clear Trump merely because the conduct alleged was not impeachable.
Of course. They want to be able to bring impeachment charges against the next Dem POTUS on a similar basis if need be and they want to avoid quotes that would prove their tribalist hypocrisy.
Based on the well-known legal principle that the need to cover one’s own misdeeds and protect your own interests is more important than a silly old oath that you took to…who was that again?
G*d.
They talk and behave like one or more of the below:
(1) That they are talking only to the GOP Base
(2) That they will never face an honest election again
(3) That they believe that the American people will accept their wrongdoing
All of the above relate to items they cannot control.
They can hope and calculate the GOP Base can vote in sufficient numbers to keep them in office
They can hope and calculate that Trump’s cheating operation will succeed and eliminate any uncertainty of victory in November (thus permitting the appearance of superior GOP strength)
They can hope that those who are not Trumpers/GOP Base are simply too distracted, demoralized or disinterested to stop them
I believe that they are wrong on all counts, otherwise they would not have been doing any “explaining” at all.
GOP politicians have developed a technique of projecting strength(s) they may not have. It’s part of the Game. They have also developed an appreciation of being able to go full-blown RWNJ in the past weeks.
(1) No need to be subtle
(2) Makes Democrats get more pessimistic and gloomy
Alexander’s GOP colleagues were quick praise the Tennessean — whose statement Thursday effectively killed any hopes for trial witnesses — for his thoughtfulness fealty.
Sen. Joe Manchin III (D-W.Va.), meanwhile, called on his colleagues to censure Trump rather than acquit him, noting that doing so “would allow a bipartisan statement condemning his unacceptable behavior in the strongest terms.”
“The actual actions that they accuse the President of do not rise to the level of an impeachable offense by themselves,” Sen. Mike Rounds (R-ND) told TPM.
Make sure we all remind Republicans of this when they try to impeach future President AOC for getting a $300 haircut.
