You’ll hear a lot about the “mark of Cain” from right-wing religious sorts. What are the chances it is actually that strange orange coloration?

This is a great remembrance of Ron Nessen from Hunter Walker. It brings me back to a time when I was little.

Scene: someone, far from Washington and all the pressure, on vacation . . . think, “a playful adult who is great with kids, and always pulling funny pranks” . . . waving a hat around and carrying on, for no apparent reason, in a performance that only decades later one discovers . . . is the bucking-bronco routine of Slim Pickens from Dr. Strangelove.

Vidicon tubes and long lenses peered out at the airliners slowly sailing in and growing in size, approaching National Airport.

And now, here we are with the TSA agents’ collective bargaining rights being ganked away. Outrageously and illegally. How many TSA agents have you met? I flew near one who was conversing about the tribulations the agents endured and how hard it was to retain people given the madcap ministrations of management.

I think back, to those vidicon tubes that must have been up there, somewhere, and who must have been somewhere, watching, and watching, and watching, and I think back to unpleasant fiction, and then unpleasant events in September, 2001, and see so many of the systems that actually defend the country – security theater notwithstanding, if you demoralize those people, you still put all of us, incrementally, at greater risk to be horrified again.

And now, we are welcoming back – Russian spies?

What part of this present picture that we are seeing unfold in Trump’s administration not actual, literal, wholesale destruction, literally, beyond anti-Constitutional, anti-American?

Too many things we had, we didn’t understand for what they were. On too many occasions, we didn’t see.

I wish it hadn’t take me such particular experiences to come to see.

I think we are going to learn now, in the same way, and with comparable difficulty.
