A bipartisan group of senators on Sunday announced a deal on framework of legislation aimed at reducing gun violence that includes funding for mental health and school security. Thus far, 10 Republican senators stated their support of the deal.
I know any progress is a good thing however I cannot help but think the gop compromise is only for mid term optics, look a little less soulless. Good day for prairie dogs I guess. Sorry, very jaded on this subject
Agreed, this bill is weak and is meant to provide the GOP cover for the midterms. It should not be called a Gun control bill it is a GOP cover our ass bill.
That’s exactly the scam. The right gets a twofer. They get to take the issue off the table and claim they “did something” and when another a-hole murders a classroom of kids they get to claim “gun laws don’t work.” Fucking bastards.
The deal closes the so-called “boyfriend loophole” in order to prevent a domestic abuse from purchasing a gun if they are convicted of abusing their partner.
Only if they are convicted?!?
Isn’t being merely charged with abusing their partner a sufficient “red flag?”
There are not enough votes to pass a bill in the Senate, which isn’t really a problem at this point since they haven’t written a bill. But hey, breaking news amirite?
Gosh, I wonder how many of the 40 republicans opposed to this will have a record of saying “It’s a mental health issue” after one or more mass shootings.
Watered-down weak sauce, as expected from the cowards in the Senate. It might have had a real impact if they had managed a Federal ban on sales of semi-auto long guns to those under 21, but this is just window dressing with little very little impact on the problem. It also reinforces the worst diversionary talking points with a focus on mental health and “hardening” schools.
I wonder what would happen if Biden said he’d veto the bill without raising the age to purchase a semi-auto long gun? That’s the rule in Florida, for cryin’ out loud and it probably has high public support. I doubt the Senate would have a supermajority to override it.
It’s a dilemma. If you say this is table scraps, meant as PR, they can turn an accusation of not really caring and politicizing the killings back on you. It enables them to say look, even the Democrats agree the problem is mental health and school security. But as long as your choices are bad and worse, take it and maybe it saves a few scores of lives, or a few dozen. Maybe it saves one. Call it the Schindler’s List Act of 2022.
It’s a “good bill” as long as we realize that it’s a political bill and not a public safety bill. Perhaps the next generation of senators can show a little imagination and courage once in a while. Or maybe we have a permanent powerless, gutless, obstructionist senate like the one Julius Caesar despised.
From watching her traipse around both sides of the Senate floor lately, I suspect she very aggressively “offered” (insisted on?) her services. She so wants to have a foot in both parties in order to build her back-home run for queen or governor or something. i suspect those horny old farts in the Senate just couldn’t say no to someone cute like Kristen. (The only thing I am accusing Kristen of here is playing up to the egos of these tired old men.)
Well, if he got a few extra bucks from Uncle Sugar to spend on better mental health for those Texans who could use the attention, it’s hard to say that wouldn’t be appropriate and useful. Aren’t there people as we speak standing around in Dealey Plaza waiting for JFK to show up?
I think the significance of this bill is less about the exact provisions it contains, or whether it will have much of an effect on gun violence but, rather, it’s a sign that the NRA is losing its grip on the Republican Party. It’s important to remember that most Republicans probably don’t have much use for guns and only ever supported the NRA out of fear of repercussions for not doing so. They’ve felt threatened by the NRA for years and nobody likes to be under constant threat.
What this means is that, as the NRA’s power recedes, Republicans who’ve grown to hate them over the years due to their nonstop coercion tactics will feel free to exact their revenge. The NRA wore out its welcome years ago, even with most Republicans. As a result, they’ve managed to stay relevant only by engaging in more and more threatening and coercive behavior-- further alienating those who already dislike them.
Once their power has receded beyond a certain tipping point, I can only imagine a feeding frenzy where each and every Republican who has grown to hate them takes out all of their pent-up frustrations on them in massive acts of retribution. I can only hope that tipping point comes soon and this legislation might very well be a sign that it’s close.
